ADOPTED 2/8/18
Benji
Hello, my name is Benji. My animal id is #17498. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 02-Jan-2018.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: I love a dog with rabbit’s ears and a chocolate body. Looks delicious, right? Even more when I read all the good stuff other volunteers have to say about him. Well mannered, good on the walk, friendly…I had to take him out. Benji is a very handsome youngster, well groomed, well dressed, healthy. In short…a good looking guy. He loves to play, cold weather or not, and he is a pro at the ball. No guarding involved. He is so excited at the sight of the tennis ball but nevertheless, sits until I throw it. Benji is a steady walker, likely house trained, and civil to other pooches met in the street. He enjoys his time in playgroups with both males and females. He is not wary of sudden movements around him, noises, cars, and clearly is happy with staff or other volunteers petting him. Yes, he is very sociable, lively although not hyper, and a really good boy one would love to have in his or her house as a permanent guest. Come and see for yourself, ask us to take him out for you and watch what a great young man he is. Benji so would love to be your forever best friend!

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Benji so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Benji remains calm when in his kennel in the shelter environment and social with handlers outside of his kennel. He maintains a loose wiggly body throughout interactions and solicits attention from handlers.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: AVERAGE (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)
Behavior Asilomar: H – Healthy
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Benji jumps up some on people in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
