06/18/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I loved Bello before I even met him simply because he is older and old dogs are the best, but he’s shown me lots of other reasons to love him too! They include: How he sleeps so deeply in his cage despite being in a sometimes hectic environment (his hearing isn’t what it used to be!) and greets me with a tail wag and kind eyes when I gently nudge him awake. How he didn’t want to go back in his cage the first time we met, but let me pick him up. How he’s easy to handle on leash and seems housebroken. His smile. How he seems a little lost, but wags his tail when I talk to him and is happy to explore the strange place he finds himself in. How he takes treats nicely and has adorable old man teeth. How he accepts all of my displays of affection and then comes back, rests his head on my knee and thanks me with his eyes. Bello is truly a charming older gent and makes such easy company! Come meet him at Brooklyn ACC and discover all the reasons to love him!
06/16/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bello came to our shelter as a stray, so we have no behavior information prior to what has been observed in the shelter. During the intake Bello was calm and moved at a slow pace, he showed no behavior concerns. When Bello entered the SAFER room he was relaxed with a soft body posture, he was friendly when approaching the assessor. Bello allowed all handling items to be conducted while maintaining a soft body during the assessment. During tag interaction Bello did not engage in play but followed the assessor at the end of the leash with soft body posture. We believe Bello can go to an adopter with an average amount of dog experience. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft , soft and loose body, and open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy 1: No interest. Dog-Dog: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Bello displays soft body language as he greets the other dog. He attempts to mount her, but listens to her correction. He wanders in the pen with a relaxed body.
06/16/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Bello was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Bello is slightly sexually motivated and will attempt to mount males and females. He is able listen to corrections from other dogs and handler interruptions and wanders in the pen. He has become a staple dog in a group of calm dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that a through dog-dog interaction be done with any potential adopters dogs, making sure they are comfortable with Bello’s mounting behavior. 6/16: Bello displays soft body language as he greets the other dog. He attempts to mount her, but listens to her correction. He wanders in the pen with a relaxed body. 6/23: Bello greeted the female dog with soft body language. He is sexually motivated but does not attempt to mount. He listens to her corrections and wanders in the pen. 6/25: In a group of calm male and female dogs, Bello persistently sniffs both male and female genital regions. He attempts to mount but listens to handler interruptions and wanders in the pen.
