S: Super friendly – wiggly body, wagging tail, excited, allows all handling O: BAR-H, BCS 7-8/9, MMs pink and moist, CRT <2 sec EENT: No discharge OU, AU, nose. Mild tartar and gingivitis. PLNs: Not enlarged. H/L: NSR, NMA. Eupnic, quiet lung sounds. Abd: Soft, no pain on palpation, no masses palpated M/S/I: Amb x4. No skin lesions noted. A volunteer writes:

Bella Ann (so nice we named her twice) is about as cute as they come. A little grey hippo with adorable bat ears, this 6 year-old beauty commands the attention of everyone she meets. From inside her kennel her tail is a silver blur, thumping against the sides of her den like a joyful metronome on high. She’s leashed in no time and off we go and now our little hippo is more like the Energizer bunny. Boing, boing, boing! She hops down the hall and right out the door out into the great, wide world. She does pull quite a bit on leash but that’s what happens when you have places to be! Bella handles her business straight away and after a quick stroll to the park and back we make our way into an open pen. Once there two things immediately catch her emerald green eyes – a toy…and a toy! Yes Bella has her choice of not one but two squeaky balls (one for each name?) and now there’s a tough decision to make. The result? Drumroll….BOTH! Bella delightedly sprints from corner to corner mouthing and chomping on each ball flashing an infectious smile in between. Bella is a surrender to us and we’re told that she needs time to warm up to new faces. Possibly…though the Bella I met needed no warming at all. In fact once playtime was done she wanted nothing but kisses! And I was happy to oblige. Sweet Bella Ann, our little energizer bunny slash hippo slash girl with the adorable bat ears. She’s so nice we named her twice. And I know for her second time’s the charm. Bella is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.

Behavior toward strangers: It is stated that Bella sometimes needs time to warm up to new people.

Other notes: Bella was abandoned in a basement where she was cared for by neighbors in the building for a few months.

SAFER ASSESSMENT:  1/31/17

Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth.

Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game.

Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds.

Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds.

Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy.

Summary: Bella displayed no concerning behaviors on her assessment. She was friendly and social throughout.

2/1: When intorduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Bella-Ann mostly ignores the greeter dog.  She offers correction for mounting.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/20/17

During her initial medical exam, Bella was very social and allowed all handling.

ENERGY LEVEL:

We have no history on Bella so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)
