04/27/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Bella is a young gal, rather quiet in her kennel, blending with its navy walls as she is as dark as night. She comes right away to her door, is leashed in no time and rushes with me to the street. She pulls quite a bit, at least for me. She does her business at once and back in the yard we go. She is well nourished, healthy and wears the nicest “little black dress”, totally flawless. She seems like a willful gal, a bit high strung and quite energetic. She accepts a scarf around her neck as most young ladies wear accessories, even if they are tomboys like Bella. Food most often softens and bonds people, same with dogs. Bella LOVES treats, will jump and sit for them and begs insistently for more. We are cool together. Bella hops on the bench, next to me, settles on my lap and kisses me profusely. She becomes playful too, runs after the ball, plays tag and mouths me a little. Now we are talking. She is definitely happy although I have not gotten a smile yet. It is nice to see a positive progression in a pooch and Bella certainly showed me her soft side, which I appreciated very much. She may have shown anxiety during arrival, but is more relaxed out here. Tomboy Bella, who might be a bit of a free spirit but promises to be a very loyal pet, is waiting for a new home and the love of a human at the Manhattan Care Center. Watch a clip of the beautiful Bella by copy-pasting this link to your browser bar: https://youtu.be/r-xW9nnt-n4 Another volunteer writes: Bella is a beautiful bundle of energy. She pulled quite a bit throughout our walk and was very enthusiastic about other dogs. She appears to be friendly toward them. She did calm down slightly towards the end of our walk. Her charcoal fur is gorgeous. She would benefit from regular walks and some consistent training.
04/26/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bella pulls hard on the leash, she was mouthy (moderate) and jumpy. She was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, wagging tail. She was calm and relaxed during the sensitivity. Bella showed some concern during the tag interaction: snarled and air snapped at the assessor. The behavior department decided to skip the handling part of the assessment for safety reasons. During the resources Bella was easy to handle when chewing on toys. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 5. Dog growls and air snap. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you.

Bella is a young gal, rather quiet in her kennel, blending with its navy walls as she is as dark as night…She comes right away to her door, is leashed in no time and rushes with me to the street. She pulls quite a bit, at least for me. She does her business at once and back in the yard we go. Bellamight have been found in a park but she was not out for long…She is too well nourished, healthy and wears the nicest “little black dress”, totally flawless. She seems like a willful gal, a bit high strong and quite energetic. She plays rather enthusiastically in playgroup with equally bouncy dogs . She will answer back if another pooch barks nastily at her. She accepts a scarf around her neck as most young ladies wear accessories, even if they are tomboys like Bella. Food most often softens and bonds people, same with dogs. Bella LOVES treats, will jump and sit for them and begs insistently for more. We are cool together. Bellahops on the bench, next to me, settles on my lap and kisses me profusely. She becomes playful too, runs after the ball, plays tag and mouths me a little. Now we are talking…..She is definitively happy although I have not gotten a smile yet. It is nice to see a positive progression in a pooch and Bella certainly showed me her soft side, which I appreciated very much. I know what people will say…Just another black dog…Looks are important indeed and play a big role in the many choices we make in life…But in the end, with time, we discover that inner beauty wins over outer beauty… Tomboy Bella, who might be a bit of a free spirit but promises to be a very loyal pet, is waiting for a new home and the love of a master at the Manhattan Care Center.
