10/28/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I think that Bella Rae is a French BullDog crossed with a Boston Terrier. The result is really cute ! Bella Rae is with us as her family moved to a place not allowing dogs. She lived happily with a 12 year old child and played nicely with her peers. She comes with wonderful comments and seems to have been a very loving pet. Bella Rae is a very pretty gal dressed in a well groomed “marron glace” and white coat. She is thin, though and was found to have pyometra, a condition best treated with a spay and antibiotics. Bella Rae, although a little shaken by the procedure(and her relinquishment) feels much better now, and pretty soon, everything will be history. She is still is a little shy and likes a very gentle approach. She lets me put a scarf around her neck and take a hundred pictures of her. She is good on the leash and even does her business on the way. She likes to be petted, gently and slowly. We have to understand that she is a bit mixed up with all that has been happening to her. She is so tiny and adorable laying on her “little dog” bed in her kennel. Bella Rae needs some TLC, a new home and a new human to love. Come and meet her soon at the Manhattan Care Center.
10/27/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unaltered, Owner surrender Previously lived with: Adults/ Children Behavior toward children: Gentle Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: None reported Bite history: Not reported Housetrained: Unknown Energy level/descriptors: High energy Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 10/27/16 Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Bella Mae was shy but friendly upon meeting the assessor with a low body and tail and trying to stay close. During the assessment she became uncomfortable when the assessors tried to position her. Bella Mae exposed her front teeth and snapped. PLAYGROUP: Bella Mae’s previous owner does not cite history around dogs. It is unknown how her behavior may translate into a home setting. When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Bella Mae is initially uncomfortable and offers correction for approach. Once allowed extended time to warm up, Bella Mae becomes more comfortable and begins to solicit and engage in bouts of play. Based on behavior observed while in our care, the behavior department feels that Bella Mae would benefit from slow introductions to respectful resident dogs in a home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/27/16 During her initial medical examination, Bella Mae appeared tense and uncomfortable with handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Bella Mae has attempted to snap multiple times during her stay at our care centers, for this reason, we believe Bella Mae would benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue group who can further assess this behavior in a stable environment.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Bella Mae has displayed fearful/defensive behavior during his stay at our care centers, tolerating very minimal handling. It is recommended that Bella Mae be allowed a proper time to decompress to aid in acclimating him to a new environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Bella Mae to new and unfamiliar situations.)
10/27/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR

When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Bella Mae is initially uncomfortable and offers correction for approach. Once allowed extended time to warm up, Bella Mae becomes more comfortable and begins to solicit and engage in bouts of play. Based on behavior observed while in our care, the behavior department feels that Bella Mae would benefit from slow introductions to respectful resident dogs in a home. 10/28: Bella Mae is, again, defensive when first being introduced to a larger group of males and females. She then relaxes and begins to engage in chase with the group.
