08/11/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Bella, what a little cutie pie! I just want to put her in my pocket and run on out of the shelter with her. Of course, if I did, she’d probably hop out on the way and try to chew up every paper towel roll/toy/bone/treat in sight! 🙂 Bella is a typical puppy–affectionate, loving, cuddly, energetic, and chewy! Her little tail never stops wagging and she’s a ball of excitement every time we go for a walk. She loves to sniff, play, and cuddle. Bella is so curious and full of life that as I was carrying a wad of dirty paper towels to the trash, she grabbed a chunk of them to chew up! Bella seems like she may not have had the chance to interact with other dogs in her previous home, and is not as well socialized as she should be for her age. She is a bit overeager with other dogs. It will take time for Bella to learn how to interact “politely” with other dogs, and she would do well with an experienced adopter who is ready to spend the time needed to help Bella learn basic social skills (and a few other basic training skills as well). Bella is a joyful and affectionate pup who I’m sure will do great with someone who is ready to help her be all that she can be.
08/09/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bella previously lived with adults and has been around small children. The owner stated Bella is friendly and playful around strangers, adults and children. The owner mentioned Bella has been around other dogs and got along with them. The owner describes Bella as a loving, affectionate and playful with a high activity level. At intake it was reported Bella was friendly with loose body posture, she allowed all handling. During SAFER Bella came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, she was friendly and playful towards the assessor. She allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Bella joins the game during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Bella was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Due to some concerns during Bella dog interaction she seems to be under-socialized with other dogs. She attempts to engage in play, but it is clear that she has not had proper exposure towards other dogs. She immediately mounts the other dog and becomes frustrated when they do not engage in play. She begins to low growl and the session is ended. The behavior department feels she can be suitable for an experience adopter and we recommend a thorough dog to dog interaction before being place into a permanent home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play ends. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: Bella seems to be under-socialized with other dogs. She attempts to engage in play, but it is clear that she has not had proper exposure towards other dogs. She immediately mounts the other dog and becomes frustrated when they do not engage in play. She begins to low growl and the session is ended.
08/06/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
According to Bella’s previous owner, Bella has been exposed to other dogs & gets along with them. Due to the concerning behavior she has shown towards other dogs at the Care Center, the Behavior Department recommends that Bella be the only dog in the home and be placed with an adopter willing to socialize her with other dogs using positive reinforcement technics. 8/6: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Bella is hyper motivated to meet the other dog. Once in the pen, Bella attempts to engage in play but becomes over-aroused quickly. She growls and lunges on top of the other dog and the session is ended. 8/9: Bella seems to be under-socialized with other dogs. She attempts to engage in play, but it is clear that she has not had proper exposure towards other dogs. She immediately mounts the other dog and becomes frustrated when they do not engage in play. She begins to low growl and the session is ended.
