06/12/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
06/12/16 12:56 Bella is a brown and black spayed American Pitbull/Boxer mix. She was surrendered along with her littermate Luna due to a new baby entering the home. Luna and Bella were not socialized with children and owner was not willing to keep them in the home with the baby. Bella was a gift from a neighbor and was with owner since she was a few weeks old. Bella has lived with three adults in her previous home. Owner stated she is aggressive towards strangers and will growl at new people, he stated she will not engage in play and will generally kept her distance. She has spent limited time with chidlren and owner stated when she saw the child in the home she will growl. She has not been around cats and lived with another large breed dog, her sister in the home. She is described as relaxed and affectionate and owner stated the two dogs are always together. During storms or fireworks Bella is terrified and will try to escape from the yard. She has been kept mostly outdoors and was kept in the yard. Bella is used to yard play and will bark and growl when the yard is approached by strangers. She eats dry food and is free fed. Bella’s food was not touched while eating so behavior is unknown; owner did not try to take treats away either. She was bathed in the yard and will struggle but tolerate baths. Upon intake Bella was tense and was handled with the assistance of her owner. Counselor was able to scan(positive) and photo was taken outside. While on leash she was reactive and began to struggle and laid down unwilling to walk with ACO.
06/18/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Bella is not just Bella the Beautiful, but Bella the Brave. She looks like she was very cared for, but sadly she has not been well socialized. She has spent most of her life in a yard with her littermate. When they were surrendered Bella was so distraught she refused to walk and had to be carried by a staff member. She is reported to be terrified during storms and fireworks, wary of strangers, and relaxed and affectionate with her owner. I’m happy to report Bella has swept this stranger off her feet! She is shy and nervous, but with a slow approach quickly reveals her desire to connect and capacity to love and be loved. She’ll rest her head on my lap and seems very comforted by petting. She’s very attentive, not in a cautious way but in a looking-for-guidance way. On each of our walks she comes more out of her shell — most recently being very waggy and even bouncing along as we make our way down the block. While she probably isn’t formally housetrained, she keeps her cage clean and relieves herself outside so I suspect she’d catch on quickly. She’s very treat motivated — very helpful for coaxing her through anything scary that we come across. She’ll need some work, time and patience, but she is incredibly sweet and I think she is more than worth it! Bella is at Brooklyn ACC hoping she’ll get her chance .
06/14/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bella previously lived with three adults in the home. The owner stated Bella can be reactive towards strangers and will growl at new people, she will not engage in play and will generally kept her distance. The owner mentioned Bella has spent limited time with children but when she saw the child in the home she will growl. The owner describes Bella as relaxed and affectionate. At intake it was reported Bella was fearful with her tail tucked, she allowed all handling with assistance from the owner. During SAFER Bella came into the assessment room fearful with her tail tucked, she was friendly and social towards the assessor with a slow approach. She allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Bella was fearful with her body low and tail tucked during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Bella was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Due to some concerns stated from the previous owner Bella will growl when she see children, the behavior department feels she can be suitable for an experience adopter with no children and we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Luna be given the opportunity to interact at her own pace. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture relaxed, her tail is semi tucked and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body a bit tense, mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog licks, then turns away. Dog-dog: Bella is nervous as she enters the pen. She greets the other dog and anxiously wanders in the pen.
