5/24 BEHAVIOR Average Home
Bella came into our center on 4/2/2016. Upon intake, Bella allowed handling but was nervous, lip licking and tail tucked. Once comfortable in her environment, she relaxed considerably. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft and relaxed. Bella leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, mouth closed. She was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game. Bella did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. She showed minimal interest in Toy. When off leash with other dogs, Bella is tolerant when greeted by a female but does often lip licks and becomes stiff when approached. Bella did not engage in any play. The Behavior Team feels Bella would do well with an Average adopter. She may benefit initially from a slow approach/slow introduction. Bella will do best as the only resident dog. Bella may benefit initially from entering a calm, quiet, structured environment so she can relax and know what to expect in her new home.

BEHAVIOR: Experienced Home
Bella came into our center on 4/2/2016. Upon intake, Bella allowed handling but was nervous, lip licking and tail tucked. She began to growl when leashed and therefore admissions counselor was unable to scan for microchip. Bella was fearful inside her kennel and retreated to the back, eyes wide. Once outside, she relaxed considerably. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, tail down, neutral. Bella leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, mouth closed. She was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game. Bella did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, lip licking on first Squeeze. She showed no interest in Toy. Bella approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, lip licking, tail at spine level. The Behavior Team feels Bella would do best with an Experienced adopter who is comfortable working with nervous, fearful dogs. Once comfortable, Bella was calm and tolerant of all tactile portions of the assessment, allowing all handling. She may benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction upon first meeting her new family. Bella may benefit initially from entering a calm, quiet, structured environment so she can relax and know what to expect in her new home.

Group Behavior
When off leash with other dogs, Bella is tolerant when greeted by a female but does often lip licks and becomes stiff when approached. Bella did not engage in any play.
4/13 update: When greeting a small female dogs through a gate, Bella became overly stimulated and began to hard bark and growl. She was not further introduced.
4/14 update: When introduced to a social male on leash, Bella was loose, wiggly and tolerant – often soliciting handlers attention and not paying much attention to the helper dog. When approached by the helper dog, Bella was sitting on a bench, she offered a disproportionate correction but did not escalate. She does not appear to be benefitting from being off leash with other dogs.
ENRICHMENT NOTES
4/5: Bella is extremely scared, crouched in the corner of her kennel. Once i opened the door she allowed me to very easily rope her, there was no signs of aggression. Once in the yard off leash, Bella would often explore, solicit my attention and sit next to me. She allows all handling and accepts all touch. Very quiet, low key, and low energy girl. She was super easy to rope and go back into her kennel.
4/12: Bella’s personality has significantly changed; she is more upbeat, jumpy and excited to be outside. Her tail is wagging; she is no longer in the corner of her kennel. She enjoys running around in the yard and is very playful, she is often sitting on the bench next to me giving kisses. She is still a little hesitant to go back into her kennel but does not give me a problem. Overall it appears the Bella’s true personality has come out and she is a very social and sweet girl.
4/21: Bella continues to be very loving, affectionate and often soliciting my attention. She is very comfortable outside in the yard, with multiple people around as well. She is very “cuddly” and does not stop licking! She took well to a bath and appeared to actually enjoy it. Going in and out of the kennel she is eager to come out and easy to go in.
