03/11/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
03/11/16 11:48 BASIC INFORMATION Bella is a 4 year old Spayed American Pit-Bull Terrier. She was abandoned and taken in by owner and has been in her care for 4 years. Bella is being surrendered into our facility due to not getting along with the other two dogs that live with owner. Bella has a grain food allergy and must eat grain free or sensitive stomach formula, if not she can get an ear infection. SOCIALIZATION Around strangers she is friendly, when playing with adults depending on how you play with her she came be somewhat rough; not remembering her size. She lived with a child from the ages 8-11 and she is playful with her and relaxed. Has lived with other dogs one from her litter a female aged 3, who is she tolerant and defensive of and a male age 5 whom she has been aggressive with since she had her puppies; she would growl and bark. With other dogs she doesn’t play; there is no history of her biting another person or animal. BEHAVIOR If your shoes are left out and Bella is unattended for a while she will bite on them. When people are passing the door she barks. She has gotten into a fight with her daughter over a bottle; and has been defensive with the male dog she lived with ever since she had her puppies. You are able to touch her food bowl while she is eating and take treats or objects away from her. She isn’t bothered when its bath time but she doesn’t like the dryer. She loves being held and isn’t bothered while being restrained. Depending on how people approach you or the home she will bark but if no threat is made she is friendly. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Bella is describes as being affectionate and friendly with a medium activity level. She can catch food in the air and enjoys going for walks. When home she will follow you around or lay with her owner. She likes rope and sleeping on the couch. Bella ate dry food Purina Pro Plan Focus due to her food allergy of grain and she was free fed. Her favorite treats are bones. She is house trained and rarely have accidents in the home; she is never left in the yard or crate trained. She knows commands such as “sit”‘ like walks 2 times a day for exercise and pulls lightly on leash. Usually Bella will potty on dirt. During intake all handling was allowed form counselor to be scanned (negative), collared and photographed.
03/15/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Everything about Bella screams “Eeyore.” She is chubby, grey, and her eyes look a little sad. But in the company of people she is anything but sad! She is very quietly affectionate and loves to stay close. She’s a dream on leash and frequently looks up to check in. She has been very calm when we’ve passed other dogs, but she did have some conflicts with her former canine housemates. If I sit down on a bench she almost simultaneously sits at my feet (I’m not sure if she can hoist herself up on the bench!) or leans against my legs. She pretty much melts into me when I pet her and will give kisses of gratitude. She previously lived with a child, is said to be housetrained, will chew shoes that are left unattended, and loved to follow her previous owner around the house. I think she’d make the best shadow EVER! Please come meet her at Brooklyn ACC…if she could, I’m sure she’d say “Thanks for noticin’ me!”
03/12/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bella came to us as an owner surrender due to Bella not getting along with the other two dogs in the home. According to the owner Bella has lived with both adults and children, and may sometimes play rough with the adults depending on how they play with her. The owner reported that one of the other dogs in the home is Bella’s daughter and the male dog in the home is the father. Bella is said to not get along with the male dog ever since she has had her puppies. Additionally, Bella can tolerate her daughter, but did get into an altercation with her over a bottle. The owner was not present during this so the details are limited. When entering the behavior room Bella was very interested in interacting with the assessor with soft body language. She allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items maintaining soft body language for most of the items. She became a bit tense on the second paw squeeze but tolerated the item very well. When on an on-leash dog interaction Bella approached the helper dog with very confident body language. The behavior department believes that Bella would do best in an experienced home with no other dogs due to her history. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back her paw. Dog is bit tense . Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward.
03/13/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Bella does not initially approach the gate to greet the helper dog. She looks in his direction and then walks away. After being coaxed to the fence, Bella greets with a stiff posture and a lip curl when he leans in for a sniff. It appears that Bella does not have much interest in engaging with other dogs and is somewhat uncomfortable with them near her. Due to her behavior in playgroup, the Behavior Department feels that Bella would be most suited to living in a home with no other dogs.
