Bella
Hello, my name is Bella. My animal id is #19138. I am a desexed female gray brindle dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 25-Jan-2018, with the surrender reason stated as animal health – cannot afford vet bill.
Bella is at risk due to being diagnosed with Canine Infection Respiratory Disease Complex and will likely require home rest and a series of antibiotics for up to 14 days. This is a contagious illness to other dogs. Bella can go to a adult only home.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
Ciao Bella! When I see Bella come up to me slowly, I first notice her big brown eyes. She looks apprehensive as she takes her first step off of her bed to greet me. When she finally sniffs my hand, her tail gives a little wag. She is still shy, but such a sweetie pie. She is a bit nervous with strangers, and around other dogs she mainly keeps to herself. This old gal loves treats and head scratches! She is a bit shy, but she is looking for a home with you today!
My medical notes are…
Weight: 58.2 lbs

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: ADULT ONLY HOME
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Bella is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Bella’s previous owner reported at home, (see GROUPBEHAVIOR SUMMARY), we feel that Bella should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Bella associate dogs with things she enjoys like toys or treats.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity: Bella has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over her. It is important to always go slow and give Bella the option to walk away from any social interaction. Bella should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Bella’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Bella may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. Fearful: Bella is timid with new people. She manages her stress well and has not escalated or shown any aggression, but he does need time to warm up to new people. She does best with a slow approach, and should be permitted to greet new people at her own pace and to initiate interaction (rather than being approached and pet immediately by a new person) so she has time to adjust and become comfortable before she is handled. She should be spoken to softly and gently.
