A Little Bit About Me…

A staff member writes: Bella is an adorable pooch that was surrendered due to moving. As per her owner, Bella lived with dogs and children and they all got along well. She can be shy when you first meet her but is a sweet girl. She looks larger in the picture however, she is on the shorter side

Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

Basic Information:

Bella is an 8 year old spayed female that has no previous or current medical issues that the owner is aware of. Owner had Bella since she was 3 months old but had to surrender due to moving. `

Previously lived with:  2 Adults, 2 Children

How is this dog around strangers?  Around strangers, Bella is shy for a few minutes at first but once comfortable, she loves to give kisses.

How is this dog around children?  Owner had 2 children ages 4 and 6 in the home and stated that Bella was always relaxed and respectful around both children.

How is this dog around other dogs?  Owner had 2 other dogs in the home a few years ago, a spayed small breed female and a large breed neutered male and stated that Bella was always relaxed and respectful around both animals. When owner would walk Bella outside and there were other dogs, she would continuously bark at them.

How is this dog around cats?  Owner did not have a cat in the home so behavior is unknown

Resource guarding:  Owner was able to take away Bella’s food, treats and toys without any issues in the home. Owner stated she is not sure how Bella would react to someone else doing so.

Bite history:  Bella does not have a bite history

Housetrained:  Partially

Other Notes:  Bella is not bothered when someone pushed her off the couch or disturbs her while she is sleeping. Owner has never tried to trim her nails so behavior is unknown. Bella is afraid when someone brushes her coat and bathes her and will run away.

For a New Family to Know

Bella is described as friendly, affectionate and mellow. She has a low activity level and preferred to lounge around in the home. Owner kept Bella mostly indoors and stated that Bella is partially house trained. She would have accidents several times a day where she would urinate and defecate. Owner stated that recently, Bella has been going on the wee wee pads in the home. When left alone in the home, Bella would go potty indoors. When left alone in the yard, she was well behaved and would bark to let the owner know she wanted to be let back in. She was fed dry food only in the home brand Science Diet. Bella knows the cue Sit. For exercise, she was let in the yard to run around. When Bella is on leash, she tends to pull very hard. Owner has never tried to walk her off leash as she would run away.

Details on my behavior are…

Date of assessment:  16-Jan-2018

Look:  1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. Allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.

Sensitivity:  1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.

Tag:  1. Dog follows at the end of the leash, body soft.

Paw squeeze 1:  1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.

Paw squeeze 2:  1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.

Toy:  1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away.

Summary:  Bella remained neutral throughout her handling assessment, no behavioral concerns.

Summary (1):  1/16: Bella was very polite when greeting a female puppy. She is tolerant of pushy play solicits but mostly explores yard and avoids interaction.

ENERGY LEVEL:  Her owner describes Bella as having a low level of energy. In the care center, she displays a medium level of energy. She will benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation such as walks, exercise, and play.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:  EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)

Potential challenges:  House soiling, Fearful

Potential challenges comments:

House Soiling: Owner reports Bella has accidents in the home, but has recently began using indoor wee wee pads. We recommend leaving down wee wee pads, as well as frequent walks, a feeding schedule, and praise/treats whenever Bella appropriately eliminates outside. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse.
Fearful: Bella is initially timid. She manages her stress well and has not escalated or shown any aggression, but she does need time to warm up to new situations.
She will do best with a slow approach, and should be permitted to greet new people at her own pace and to initiate interaction (rather than being approached and pet immediately by a new person) so she has time to adjust and become comfortable before she is handled. She should be spoken to softly and gently.
