Belinda

Hello, my name is Belinda. My animal id is #18741. I am a female white dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years old.

I came into the shelter as a aco impound on 19-Jan-2018.

Belinda was placed at risk due to behavior concerns; Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Belinda has displayed fearful behavior in shelter, she displays no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance and avoid contact. We recommend allowing Belinda to interact at her own pace; force-free reward based training only is advised. Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors shown in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner.

My medical notes are…

Weight: 51.2 lbs

  • Behavior Assessment

Date of intake:: 1/19/2018

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Owner surrender

Other Notes:: Former owner reports that Belinda will bite when frightened, though no bite history was reported.

Date of assessment:: 1/23/2018

Summary:: Belinda remains fearful in the care center and unable to be safely handled. Out of concern for her stress level, a handling assessment will not be performed.

Date of intake:: 1/19/2018

Date of initial:: 1/19/2018

Summary:: Fearful; whale eyed, tail tucked though tolerated handling

ENERGY LEVEL:: Belinda’s energy level is unable to be appropriately assessed as she is high fearful in the care center; we cannot be certain of her behavior in a new home environment.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors shown in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force free behavior modification to address Belinda’s underlying anxiety. No children (under 13): Based on the level of fear Belinda displays in the care center in addition to the propensity for escalation, we are recommending an adult only home.

Potential challenges comments:: Handling sensitivity: Belinda has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times. It is important to always go slow and give Belinda the option to walk away from any social interaction. Belinda should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Belinda’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Belinda may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Belinda has displayed fearful behavior in shelter, she displays no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance and avoid contact. We recommend allowing Belinda to interact at her own pace; force-free reward based training only is advised.
