12/09/16 15:44 Basic Information: Bear is a 1 year old neutered male Chow Chow Mix that has no past or current medical issues that the owner is aware of. Owner has had Bear for a year but had to surrender due to animal’s behavior. Socialization: According to the owner, around strangers depending on the person Bear will either growl or be on alert around the person. Once comfortable, he plays gently with adults. Bear has not been around small children but has been around 2 teenagers ages 12 & 22 & owner stated that Bear was tolerant around owners children and played rough with them. Owner stated that Bear did not realize how big he is and would jump too hard on the children while playing. Owner had another Chow in the home that was a spayed female & stated that Bear was respectful with the other dog. Bear has never been around cats therefore behavior is unknown. He has never bit another animal but had nipped at owners son but not breaking skin over the last 10 days. Behavior: Bear is not bothered by thunderstorms/fireworks, being pushed off furniture, being held/restrained, being disturbed while sleeping, or having his nails trimmed. He is friendly when someone would take away his food or treats or when having his coat brushed. Owner stated that when unfamiliar people would approach the home or yard, Bear would bark. For a New Family to Know: Bear is described as friendly, affectionate, in between mellow and playful, confident, and excitable with a medium activity level. In the home, he loved to be around someone. Bear enjoys playing with squeaky toys, chew toys and bones. He was kept indoors only & is partially house trained. Owner stated that Bear would have accidents several times a month in the home. When left alone in the home, Bear would destroy household items such as pillows, and blankets. When left alone in the yard, he was well behaved. Owner crate trained Bear & stated that Bear would spend several hours a day in a crate. Bear knows the cues sit, and paw. For exercise, owner would take Bear on slow walks on the leash, to the park or let him play in the yard. On the leash, Bear pulls lightly. If owner walked Bear off leash, he would wander but come back when name was called. Owner fed Bear dry food only in the home brand name Beneful. Behavior during intake: Bear was nervous in the beginning and began to lip lick. After a few minutes, he seemed to relax and allow all handling.

KNOWN HISTORY: Neutered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults/children (age 12)/dog Behavior toward children: Tolerant though engages in rough play Behavior toward dogs: Respectful of resident dog Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: None reported Bite history: Bear was resisting going into a crate and hid under a table. Teenage Son attempted to force him into the crate, Bear growled and bit but did not break skin, released immediately. Housetrained: No Energy level/descriptors: Bear is described as friendly, affectionate, in between mellow and playful, confident, and excitable with a medium activity level. Other notes: In kennel, Bear will hide under the bed and growl, or bark if approached. He is relaxed once outside the kennel. Around children, owner reports Bear will either growl or be highly alert. When left alone in the home, Bear would destroy household items such as pillows, and blankets. Bear knows the cues sit, and paw. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/13/2016 Look: 3. Dog does not position, will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog is focused on other stimuli, body neutral, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, focused on exit Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back paw, lip lick Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, shows brief bouts of enthusiasm, but quickly loses focus. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog, turns to exit Summary: Bear allowed all handling though appeared aloof throughout assessment. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with other dogs, Bear is tolerant and polite when greeted but will avoid interaction by running away from the helper female when she approaches and solicits play. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/9/2016 Bear was nervous but allowed all handling during his exam.

We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of his environment. A period of decompression is advised before introduction or exposure to new and unfamiliar situations.
