09/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Beamer lived previously with adults and with another dog. He is reported to be exuberantly playful with adults and playful with her other dog. He has not been exposed to children or cats. He is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, and confident, with a high activity level Beamer has a history of escaping from the yard (through a 6′ fence) and breaking out of crates. He is also reported to need help with housetraining, as he had accidents daily. He may growl when high-value food items (treats, human food) are taken away, though he does not react when his food bowl is touched. It sounds as though Beamer lived primarily outdoors in his previous home. Beamer was social at intake, allowing handling with a loose body. However, Beamer is not acclimating well to the kennel environment. During his initial medical examination he offered a low, persistent growl, and was tense, with a tucked tail. Several days later Beamer’s behavior in his kennel has become extremely concerning. He is now lunging onto the bars, hard barking and snapping at the front of his kennel and making contact with his teeth bared. At this time, the Behavior Department feels that Beamer is over his threshold for arousal and is a safety concern to handle. Due to this behavior Beamer is not a candidate for a SAFER aggression assessment at this time. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. RECOMMENDATIONS: _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner Potential challenges: _X_House soiling _X_Barrier reactivity _X_Resource guarding: of high-value items, growling as a warning _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression _X_Escape/destructive behavior: reported to break out of crates, destroy fences, and dig holes in the yard
