08/30/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bastion pulls a bit on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Bastion followed the assessor at the end of the leash with a calm and relaxed body language when playing tag. He was not interested in toys. Bastion displayed no concerns during his assessment though due to some concerns regarding arousal on leash (pulling hard, growling, lunging towards other dogs) as well as his playgroup interaction, the behavior department believes Bastion would benefit best from an experienced adopter who can provide treatment/management upon following up with these issues outside of the shelter environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised, as well as providing a proper period of decompression to help Bastion acclimate to a new home environment. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog-to-dog: When introduced through a fence barrier, Bastion stiffens and lunges toward the gate, body stiff, does not growl, snap or vocalize. He begins to bark and vocalize once the female greeter dog is moved out of sight. He is muzzled before allowing to enter the pen off leash. He immediately rushes toward the greeter dog with a tense body, however quickly becomes more distracted by the presence of the muzzle.
08/30/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Bastion has been observed to lunge toward and growl at dogs while walking on leash around dogs in our care. When introduced through a fence barrier, he stiffens and lunges toward the gate, body stiff, does not growl, snap or vocalize. He begins to bark and vocalize once the female greeter dog is moved out of sight. He is muzzled before allowing to enter the pen off leash. He immediately rushes toward the greeter dog with a tense body, however quickly becomes more distracted by the presence of the muzzle. The greeter dog approaches and attempts to solicit. In response to this solcitation, Bastion’s body is slightly tense with a slow tail wag. The behavior team feels that Bastion’s behavior around other dogs should require follow up outside the care center, before placing him into a home with or introducing him to another dog. Bastion arrived as a stray, so in home behavior with dogs and history around them is unknown.
