03/29/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY:Limited 03/26/17 Intact, Owner surrender Previously lived with: Adults, children (aged 5 and 10) SAFER ASSESSMENT: 03/29/17 Baron has allowed minimal handling during his stay at the care centers, any attempts to interact may result in threatening behavior; lunging, snapping and growling towards handler. Because Baron shows little tolerance to novel stimuli and has been observed to escalate rapidly, out of concern for his stress level and safety of staff, a SAFER assessment will not be performed. PLAYGROUP: According to Baron’s previous owner, Baron gets along well with other dogs. Baron was uncomfortable with handling, giving the handler a clear warning by low growling when an attempt was made to place a collar on him. His warning was respected and attempts to place a collar on him were suspended. He greeted a novel female dog through the gate and displayed soft, loose and wiggly body language while whining. He showed sociability towards the other dog, but remain wary of the handlers. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 03/28/17 During his initial medical examination, Baron did not allow handling and remained agitated, stressed throughout; growling and snapping. ENERGY LEVEL: Baron has remained stressed throughout his stay here, he energy level low; we cannot be certain of his behavior in a future home environment.
RIN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: In the first twenty four hours, Baron was difficult to remove from his kennel due to his immediate reaction to handlers; snapping and alligator rolling when a rope is place on him. His behavior slightly improve when employees began to offer him treats. It’s been reported he is accepting them from their hands and allowing brief pets through the kennel door. When his kennel door is opened he low growls and backs away, but can be coax to the front. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors shown in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force free behavior modification to address the underlying anxiety. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Baron has been observed to panic and escalate quickly to snapping when uncomfortable, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Baron needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Baron as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. _X_Anxiety
