04/26/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 4/20/17 Neutered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 4/26/17 Summary: Barney has displayed some concerning, reactive behaviors at the care center. He has lunged, barked, and growled at dogs and lunged and barked at people passing by him. In his kennel, he growls when people approach him. Due to these concerning behaviors, made more concerning by his large size and strength, we feel that a handling assessment would be unsafe to conduct at this time. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/20/17 During his initial medical exam, Barney was active and social. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Barney so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the severe reactivity Barney has shown towards dogs and people, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who is able to further evaluate and work on these issues using positive reinforcement, force-free training in a stable, adult only foster home. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended. Potential challenges: _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Barney has been observed to react to other dogs and human passerby on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling Barney may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle him. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Due to the severity of Barney’s reactions, and his large size, guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is strongly recommended. _X_Strength/leash pulling: Barney is a very large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
