02/28/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/28/16 16:08 Barney is a young adult male APBT mix. Police found him wandering loose outside in the street. He was keeping a distance from them so they tranquilized him. When he arrived, he was drowsy and not bearing much weight on his front left limb, possible where he was darted. Barney had a soft body and kept his head and tail a little low. His tail wagged when we talked to him and as we approached each other. He sat next to us and rested his head on us as we pet him, scanned him (-), collared him, and positioned him for pictures. He took treats extremely gently. He lied down next to my feet while I worked. He didn’t pull on his leash.
03/05/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Resting quietly in his kennel Barney looks up at me as I pass and it’s love at first sight of his frumpy face. That face reminds me of my Uncle George, whiskers and all, and I knew that Barney and I would be friends. He has a strange greeting at first, not as sure as I am of our impending friendship, but I’m sure so I leash him and out we go. As we walk through the hallway to the door, one of the vet techs calls out to Barney, “Hey, my man”, and snuggles in close for some Barney kisses. After telling me what a great dog he is, Barney and I head outside so that I can discover that for myself. And boy, did I! Likely housetrained, he uses the ‘facilities’ as soon as we’re out the door. Barney pulls on the leash, so we head into the backyard for some off leash playtime. Barney does a ‘sort of’ sit for some treats sweeping them gently from my hand. He’s a total snuggle boy, pressing his face into my chest, coming onto my lap, and then rolling over for a belly rub. He wiggles and wags, and waves his paws in the air as I stroke his belly, and his upside down grin of delight fills my heart and makes me laugh. This (too) slender, softly brindle, tail waggy, kissy faced, square nose, medium sized boy is a total love looking for a new family to shower with kisses. Who’s going to be the lucky person or family to make him theirs?
03/04/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Barney showed no human-directed aggression concerns on his SAFER aggression assessment. However, he is not thriving in the shelter environment, growling when approached in his kennel for several days. This behavior has unfortunately not improved through in-kennel enrichment and treating when he is walked past. His growling behavior precludes placement in adoptions. This appears to be a form of barrier reactivity of kennel-specific behavior, but we feel it is in Barney’s best interest to move out of the kennel and into a stable home environment at this point. Please see the GroupBehavior entry for additional notes on Barney’s time in playgroup. 3/2 SAFER: Barney walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Barney followed the assessor at the end of the leash with a calm and relaxed body language when playing tag with assessor. He was easy to handle when chewing on toys. Barney did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, wagging tail, ears relaxed, open mouth. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you.
03/02/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Barney is mostly sexually motivated. He attempts to mount and does not respond to correction. Barney arrived into our care as a stray, so any in home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction, and feels that a new adopter should allow Barney time to decompress in a new home before introducing him to any resident dogs.
