06/25/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I’m not much of a puppy person, but even my heart isn’t safe from this little guy! He was found abandoned with his littermates and I imagine the world as they knew it was quite small. He has moments of timidity and is still learning how to walk on a leash (but is totally OK with being carried around!) and how to do his business outside, but is SUCH a super sweet, playful pup! His likes include trying to catch flies, TOYS (his version of the zoomies might be the cutest ever!), treats (which he uses as toys if they are too big for his little teeth), and attention from people. Although he was super happy and excited when one of his sisters was in a pen adjacent to us, he acted like quite the tough guy when we saw a dog from outside his family. He’s looking for someone to help him with his social skills…and, of course, get loads of puppy breath and love in return!
06/22/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 06/13/17 Neutered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 06/22/17 Summary: Barkotin is underage for a SAFER assessment PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Barkotin is uncomfortable around other dog and begins to becoming reactive toward them. He lunges and growls at novel dogs, as well as one of his siblings. Barkotin came to the Care Center as a stray so his previous behavior around other dogs is unknown. He was surrendered with four littermates. The Behavior Department recommends that Barkotin be placed with well-socialized resident dogs. Future guardians should continue to socialize Barkotin under the guidance of reward-based, force-free training. All introductions should be conducted slowly and be under supervision. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 06/13/17 Upon intake, Barkotin allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 06/14/17 During his initial medical examination Barkotin allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: In the care center Barkotin has been active and enthusiastic. Due to the anxiety seen, he may need some guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. Barkotin will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Recommend no dog parks _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Barkotin has displayed a low threshold for arousal during his stay at the care center during playgroup sessions, because we cannot be certain of the depth of his threshold, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center Barkotin has been observed to react to other dogs through a barrier; barking, lunging and growling. Barkotin may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs, novel stimuli that may startle him. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
06/15/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Barkotin is uncomfortable around other dog and begins to becoming reactive toward them. He lunges and growls at novel dogs, as well as one of his siblings. Barkotin came to the Care Center as a stray so his previous behavior around other dogs is unknown. Future guardians should continue to socialize Barkotin under the guidance of a reward-based, force-free training. All introductions should be conducted slowly and be under supervision. 6/15: Barkotin briefly displays playful behavior when greeting a novel playful female. He quickly becomes overwhelmed as the playful female becomes more pushy with her solicitations. 6/21: Barkotin initially ignores the novel male dog. He is uncomfortable with play solicitations, displays stiff body language, and begins to offer correction for the other male’s body contact playing. 6/22: Barkotin is reactive when greeting a male dog and his sibling through the gate. Once in the pen, Barkotin immediately lunges towards the backs of both the dogs while growling and snapping. The session is ended.
