How is this dog around children?: Barkly lived with two children, ages 12 and 13, and was reportedly relaxed and playful. He is gentle in play with children.

How is this dog around other dogs?: Barkly has lived with 2 other male large dogs. He is relaxed and gentle with all three of them.

How is this dog around cats?: Barkly’s behavior around cats is unknown.

For a New Family to Know: Barkly loves to play fetch and plays with shoes as well. He was kept outdoors only and sleeps in his crate. He eats both wet and dry food. He loves to eat anything given to him. He is house-trained and goes on grass. He pulls very hard on leash and when off leash, stays by the owner’s side.

Summary (1):: While in group, Barkly is anxious and paces the pens. He briefly greets a group of female dogs before exploring the pens again. According to Barkly’s previous owner, Barkly lived with 2 other male large dogs. He was relaxed and gentle with both of them. The Behavior Department recommends that Barkly be placed in a home with resident dogs that are well socialized and match his calm sociability. 10/26: When off leash at the Care Center, Barkly is anxious-pacing around the pens. He greets the novel female dog with a soft posture, and engages sexually motivated behavior, but stops when handlers interrupt. 10/27-11/02: In a group of calm female dogs, Barkly anxiously paces the pen while hyper-salivating, before greeting them with a soft body. He is sexually motivated but does not mount.

Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety: Barkly has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) and through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, the owner profile does not note anxiety so we cannot be certain whether this behavior will continue in a future home, or whether it is specific to the shelter environment. Strength/leash pulling: Barkly is a large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
