WEB MEMO

A volunteer writes:

Friendly, fun-loving Barkley has so much to give to the world but in his confusion and fear this gorgeous guy just isn’t putting his best foot forward at the Care Center. Imagine how you’d feel if everything and everyone you knew suddenly disappeared and you found yourself hemmed in by unfamiliar walls and surrounded by strangers…pretty scary stuff, right? Yet every day Barkley comes out of his shell a little more and I enjoyed our first date so much I was happily looking forward to spending another with this secretly charming chap. While he can be very vocal and a bit leash-shy indoors, once that rope is on Barkley trots politely by my side, takes care of business immediately and goes on a joyful sniffing spree as soon as we hit the yard. Off leash he’s quiet but curious and though he still shies away from a petting hand (and being re-leashed), he’s eager to show off his ‘come’, ‘sit’ and ‘stay’ commands in exchange for some treats or a toss of the ball. After a rousing game of fetch (no guarding issues here!) Barkley greets a passing dog with gentle tail wags and low-key friendship and then we’re off for a nice leisurely walk through the park. It breaks my heart to return this lonely boy to his kennel but a duck chew softens the blow and later in the evening I find him curled up on his bed, quietly contemplating the door with that adorable underbite set in sad pouty perfection. He quickly spots me and hops up to snuffle my hand hello and receive one last treat for being such a good boy–Barkley knows his friends. In an experienced, adult-only home where he can feel safe and learn to trust again, I’ve no doubt this handsome hunk will make a wonderful BFF and playmate. He was a loyal pet only yesterday and longs to return to the life he loved…can you help Barkley find his way home today?

04/20/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Barkley pulls a bit on the leash. He had a soft body language, neutral wagging tail, open mouth when he meets the assessor. Once the assessor tries to positioned him for the handling Barkley snarl showing his front teeth’s, with a stiff body language, his hair raised along his back. Due to the behavior demonstrated the behavior team decided to skip the handling part of the assessment for safety reasons. During the resources Barkley was not interested in toys. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Barkley greets and sniffs, and appears to be a bit sexually motivated.

04/19/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Barkley greets and sniffs, and appears to be a bit sexually motivated. When startled by a loud sound in the outside environment, he stiffens and hard barks at handlers in the pen.
