08/02/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Her coat is so intensely brown that at first glance I thought it was black until the bronze highlights made it clear. She’s a beauty who joined us with her housemate Golda (A1083281) when their owner passed away. Probably housetrained she took advantage of being outside the moment we were on the street and then showed off nice leash manners as we walked to the park. On high alert in the park as the birds and squirrels played, Barbie would have loved to give chase and join in the fun. Barbie has been nicely taken care of her coat seems healthy and her weight perfect for her size. She enjoys treats taking them gently. After some time together Barbie joined me on the park bench for a quick hug and she’ll need some time to warm up to her new person, perhaps keenly feeling the loss of her family as well as Golda. She is hoping that her new person or family will walk in the door soon. After our time together she hopped right back in her kennel and as I closed the door I told her the best is yet to come. Let’s make it be so.
08/01/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Barbie came into our center along with another similarly sized dog citing moving issues. During intake, Barbie flinched when admissions counselor attempted to pet her, barked as an unknown person entered the room. She was shy, tense, and nervous during her initial medical exam. Barbie pulled slightly on leash for her relief walk. She was cautious and alert upon entering SAFER assessment room, requiring some time to warm up before performing assessment. Once more comfortable, Barbie was more tolerant of up close tactile handling. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, body a bit tense, lip lick. She leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, ears back, mouth closed. Barbie followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft, settled easily at end. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, tail tucked. Barbie enthusiastically perked up at the sound of the squeak Toy, playfully engaging, keeping a firm grip, body not stiff. When off leash with other dogs Barbie did briefly sniff the greeter dog. She was nervous though and mostly kept to herself. The Behavior Team feels Barbie would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. She may benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction, preferably with treats. Barbie may initially do best going home to a calm, quiet, structured environment so she can relax and warm up at her own pace. She may benefit from sharing a home with another resident dog, any other resident dogs should have an in depth interaction before considering adoption. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is a bit tense; her tail is low and not moving, lip lick Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, ears back, mouth closed Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft Squeeze 1/ 2: 2. Dog does not pull back paw, tail tucked Toy 1. Dog enthusiastically and playfully engages, keeps a firm grip, body not stiff. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Barbie did briefly sniff the greeter dog. She was nervous though and mostly kept to herself.
