WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes : I fell for Bambi at first sight — her eyes are the kind that tell stories. She comes to us as a stray so I can’t say whether those stories are happy or not, but Bambi is SUCH a sweet, sweet girl. She seems housebroken, walks very nicely on leash, and is undeniably hungry: if Thumper or Flower had so much as a crumb in their dens I don’t doubt that she would find a way to squeeze her way in! But while she is always on the look out for edibles, she will do “sit” and “down” for treats and takes them nicely from my hands. She likes toys (and loves destroying them!) and also craves human affection. She leans against me when I pet her, licks my hands (even when they aren’t dusted with Milk Bones), makes the sweetest eye contact, wiggles over to me when I call her, and is always softly wagging her tail. I suspect once she is settled in, her strongest appetite will be for human companionship. She isn’t just love at first sight, but lingers on my mind long after we’ve parted ways! Please come see this special lady at Brooklyn ACC.
01/03/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None Unaltered female, Stray Other notes: Bambi allowed all handling at intake. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/31/16 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Flank squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Bambi showed no concerns on this handling assessment. PLAYGROUP: Bambi was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Bambi displays assertive posturing when interacting with a novel male dog. She stands tall behind him, following him around the pen. She attempts to mount, but responds to handler interruptions and explores the pen, keeping to herself for the remainder of the session. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/28/16 During her initial medical examination, Bambi was social, allowing all handling without issue. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: When Bambi was removed from her kennel for her SAFER assessment, she was engaged with a high-value enrichment item (peanut butter and kibble ball). When the assessor moved to leash her, she growled, tensed, and hovered over her food toy. A second toy (stuffed toy) was used as a distraction, and Bambi was able to be leashed and walked out without any issue. Bambi did appear to be guarding this high-value item in the kennel, though the situation was manageable with careful handling and distraction. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the behavior seen over the high-value resource, we recommend a home without very young children. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Bambi growled and stood over a high-value food puzzle item in her kennel. We cannot be certain whether this behavior will appear again in a future home, but potential adopters should be comfortable with managing resource guarding and should be aware that Bambi may behave similarly with any item she decides is high-value to her. We recommend leaving Bambi alone while eating and teaching her “drop” and trade up games using treats and toys. Items should always be traded or dropped items rewarded.
12/30/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Bambi was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. 12/30: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Bambi displays assertive posturing when interacting with a novel male dog. She stands tall behind him, following him around the pen. She attempts to mount, but responds to handler interruptions and explores the pen, keeping to herself for the remainder of the session. 1/4: Bambi was much more relaxed today when introduced to a calm, mature dog. She socialized with a loose body while constantly sniffing his face and genitals. She tolerated his attempts to mount and would give him soft head whip/muzzle punch corrections. 1/7: Bambi leans her body on the gate as she is introduced to a calm female dog. Once the gate is open, she attempts to mount her and is assertive as she targets and followers her, before she is interrupted by the handler.
