A volunteer writes: Imagine the most handsome bright-eyed puppy that ever stumbled across the machine from Honey, I Blew Up The Kid…that’s Baloo!! He doesn’t always lift his leg when he pees, can be adorably cautious of new things we encounter (like a washing machine or a big pile of cardboard boxes), and has a lot of energy. He is strong and can be jumpy and mouthy when he’s excited, but I haven’t had any trouble redirecting him into a “sit” or reminding him that a toy is better suited for playing with than a leash (he’ll carry one all the way around the block!). He loves to play fetch, seems fine with other dogs, and always keeps his cage clean. Baloo might not be totally aware of his size and strength, but he is definitely aware of how much he loves people and knows how to show it. He is super cuddly and makes my heart melt every time he drapes across my lap (he really leans against me, gives kisses, makes the sweetest eyes, and sometimes bats his paw against my hand!). He might sometimes be a handful, but he is ALWAYS a sweetheart! Come to Brooklyn ACC and make this humongous puppy yours!
05/31/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full profile 5/29/17 Neutered, Owner surrender (Since puppyhood in the previous home) Previously lived with: Adults, children(12 years old) and spent time with another dog. Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and outgoing. Behavior toward children: Relaxed and playful Behavior toward dogs: Playful Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: Unknown Bite history: Unknown Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: The owner stated Blue displays a high activity level in the household. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/31/17 Look:1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity:1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag:2. Follows at end of leash, body soft but anxious and attempts to exit. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy:1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog smells, then turns away. Summary: Blue was friendly but can be rough with play, mouthy and anxious in the assessment room and towards the assessor. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Baloo displays soft body language when greeting male and female dogs. He mostly keeps to himself as he explores. According to Baloo’s previous guardian, Baloo has been around a male Bulldog and was playful with the dog. The Behavior Department recommends that Baloo be placed with resident dogs that match his calm sociability. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 5/29/17: Upon intake Baloo was friendly and playful, he allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/30/17: During his medical examination, Baloo was active and attention seeking, he allowed all handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner reports a high activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13)Due to Baloo mouthiness, rough play and not knowing his size. The behavior department feels that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control- It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition- Baloo has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Baloo’s teeth make contact with skin). _X_Anxiety- Baloo has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) continually through the SAFER and through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Baloo, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment.
