03/30/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
03/30/16 11:03 Bailey is an 8 year old neutered APBT mix. He was brought to ACC by police. They don’t know where he came from. Bailey was growling in his crate. A staff member tipped it on its side and leashed him. He lunged at him as he exited the crate, so the staff member held his leash away from him. He was tense with wide eyes and was looking around while we scanned him (+), used the leash to remove his collar, and positioned him for pictures. He would head flip but wasn’t lunging anymore.
04/02/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Calling all people with strong egos!!! Why? Because I guarantee that when you walk down the street with Bailey he will be the star attraction and you’re just the person on the tall end of the leash. He’s an adorable little peanut in a tan coat, a frumpy face, buck teeth and big soulful eyes. His leash manners are good, he’s likely housetrained, and although he was a bit shy at first he warmed up nicely and decided my lap was a good place to hang out! He’s nimble for a middle aged little dude, jumping up on the bench to lie on me, reaching up to give my face a good washing with his tongue. So cute! As other dogs approached our pen he watched quietly not really demonstrating any reaction and in his first playgroup he approached the female greeter to sniff how do you do, but didn’t engage. Bailey is quiet and calm, snuggly and easy, and that face…. I’d love to say a face only a mother could love, but seriously……….it’s a face anyone can (and should) love. Come meet him today, he’ll win your heart as he did mine. To see video, copy and paste the following link into your browser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?
04/03/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bailey came into our center after being brought in by police as a stray. He was growling inside his crate, eyes wide and tense. He head flipped during handling in admissions department. Bailey was calm and quiet upon entering SAFER assessment room, approached assessor immediately with soft body and wagging tail. He was easy to position for all tactile portions of the assessment, allowed all handling. Bailey allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, relaxed. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, open mouth, slight lip lick. Bailey followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, approached assessor at end. He moved his soft body and legs away during Squeeze item, so remaining item was conducted on Flank. Bailey had no response to both Flank Squeezes. He showed minimal interest in Toy. When off leash with other dogs, Bailey is cautious of the yard environment. He is a bit tense-bodied but does briefly approach to sniff the female greeter. Due to his reactivity while stressed, the Behavior Team feels Bailey would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit initially from a slow approach/slow introduction so he can become comfortable and know what to expect. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, mouth closed, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Flank squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog may smell and/or lick, then turns away. 4/4 update: Bailey is showing social, affiliative behavior outside the kennel but does appear to have some barrier reactivity, particularly when visited by new people. The response is not consistent, but he may hard bark and lunge when approached. Due to this barrier-specific behavior we feel it is in Bailey’s best interest to leave the kennel setting as quickly as he can in order to feel more comfortable and to cease rehearsing this behavior.
03/31/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Bailey has been cautious but shown brief interest in greeting during off leash interaction. He arrived as a stray so in home behaviors with dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends pre-adoption interaction and allowing Bailey time to acclimate into his new surroundings before introduction to resident dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Bailey is cautious of the yard environment. He is a bit tense-bodied but does briefly approach to sniff the female greeter. 4/5 update: Bailey greets briefly, though cautious, and jumps onto the female helper when she attempts to solicit.
