06/09/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
06/09/16 19:30 Basic information: Bagheera was returned to MACC after being adopted two months ago. His adopter’s living situation changed so the dog had to come back to the shelter. He was seen by a doctor last month for a basic exam. Socialization: This dog is very friendly towards people and other dogs. He is very high energy and would benefit greatly from proper training. He is okay with kids but he would probably do best in a home without children. This guy has LOTS of energy and love to give. He got along very well with the Jack Russel mix in his former home. She was older and much more relaxed. He has not spent time with cats. He has never bitten another animal or person. Behavior history: Bagheera’s biggest obstacle will be his extremely high energy level. He was never left alone in his former home. During fireworks or thunderstorms he does get nervous and he tries to hide. He is very friendly and doesn’t seem to be bothered by much of anything. He just wants to play all the time. For a new family to know: Bagheera is described as very friendly, excitable and sometimes pushy. He loves to chase his ball and play tug-a-war. He has been kept mostly inside. He knows how to sit on command. He does tend to pull very hard on the leash.
06/15/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer shares Bagheera’s singles ad: Handsome, very energetic and fun loving dog seeking his human soul mate. I’m fun, lively, love to play ball and don’t guard it, never stop wagging my tail, am ready for a hug the moment you’re ready, and love company. I do pull hard on the leash so will be looking for you to train me with positive reinforcement training, but love to learn new things and I’m quite smart. I play hard with other dogs, have lived with another dog, and am a total lover of life. Nothing much bothers me except thunderstorms and fireworks — I try to hide. I’m told I’m handsome with a sculpted gorgeous face, my coat shines and my weight is perfect for my size. Let’s spend our lives together exploring new things and getting lots of exercise everyday. Couch potatoes need not apply! A volunteer writes: I must confess I have a soft spot for young ruffians and handsome, smart, athletic Bagheera caught my attention from the first day he leapt his front paws up the door to say hello. I call him Baggie and he calls me The Ball Lady (at least, that’s how I imagine it) and we always have a great time together in the yard, practicing his sit (excellent) and stay (getting there!) and sharing treats, toys and tennis balls. To call Baggie energetic is like pointing out the sea is blue; it’s such an integral part of his being that it goes without saying–this is not a dog for the faint of heart! He does pull a bit on leash but I find that clamping a toy in his mouth helps, and we’ve been testing out a harness-style rope to which he doesn’t object at all. His previous BFF was a little Jack Russell Terrier, and while a crowded playgroup can overwhelm him at first, it’s not long before Baggie’s joyfully running and wrestling with the best of them. He’s as bright as he is playful and really does know how to behave himself when he tries, but like all kids, he’ll push his boundaries if you let him. Consistency and leadership are the keys to turning this fun-loving puppy into a great adult dog. Continue with his training and I guarantee that you’ll soon have the World’s Best Running Buddy…or at least The World’s Most Enthusiastic! A good heart, good looks and plenty of good-natured fun are the wonderful gifts Bagheera has to offer. Are you ready to welcome them with open arms?
06/11/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bagheera came to us as an owner surrender due to the owner’s current living situations. According to the owner Bagheera is very friendly towards people and other dogs. It was reported that Bagheera is a dog with a very high energy level, so he should go with an adopter prepared to provide the necessary mental and physical stimulation for his needs. While on his relief walk Bagheera pulled very strongly on the leash. He entered the behavior room with very excited and energetic body language. He greeted the assessor by jumping up with loose and wiggly body language. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items while maintaining soft body language. Bagheera proved easy to handle on the toy item keeping a firm grip with soft body language as the assessor attempted to take. We believe that due to his high energy and report from the previous owner, placement with an experienced adopter is best at this time. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, and open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. He indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. 6/9: Bagheera engages in wrestling, vocal play. 6/10 update: Bagheera is initially overwhelmed in a large crowd but then begins to engage in play.

Of course I was first in line to see “The Jungle Book” this past weekend. Talking animals?! A boy raised by wolves?! I so adored the book and film when I was young and though many years have passed my affection hasn’t waned. By far my favorite character is and was Bagheera. Beautiful and sleek in his slick, dark coat, Bagheera serves as the guardian for man-cub Mowgli. He is wise, protective, and good. The self-appointed king of the jungle. Well our Bagheera is certainly good. At only one year-old he is all energy and light, bounding up to everyone he sees and bestowing endless hugs and kisses upon them. Bagheera is too young to know any foes, he has no enemies as of yet, he is the king of his own jungle. Our Bagheera is protective. Young and petulant, he grabs a stuffed toy from my hand and dashes away ignoring any request for return. “Mine!” he seems to say. Yes, our little pen is his kingdom and everything in it his to maintain. Luckily I’m happy to oblige. And to watch. Time and again he tosses said toy to himself and jumps to amazing heights to catch it. It’s an incredible sight – his long, elegant legs launching him into the air as he twists against the sunlight in his slick, dark coat. Of course he flails from time to time. And falls just as often. An older, wiser pup would pause, take a breather, reassess. But Bagheera doesn’t care. He is all about the moment, the here and the now, and without the broken bones, scars, and battle wounds that come with wisdom, why not throw caution to the wind? Bagheera pulls a bit on leash (too many things interest our young ruler!) and appears to be housebroken. He is sweet and curious, handsome and joyful, protective and good. The wisdom… well it will come. But I hope not too soon. Bagheera is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.

BEHAVIOR : (04/16)
Bagheera pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, mouthy (moderate). He was overexcited during handling, jumping up, grabbing at the leash (easy to distract), and was hard to position, but showed no aggression. Bagheera was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He took the toy with a soft body language.
Bagheera appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced adopter. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction.
Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, mouths the hand with a moderate pressure.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure.
Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure.
Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
Playgroup Notes:
When off leash with other dogs, Bagheera is a bit anxious but does attempt to solicit exuberant play eventually.
4/19 update: Bagheera engages in bouncy running play with males and females. He offers paw slaps and bounds up to dogs to solicit play.
