02/23/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Oh, Baby!! This crop-eared girl is so, so beautiful and so, so out of her element. It might be unjustified for me to like her as much as I do, given I can’t tell you much about her other than she is very timid, but her vulnerability and sweet face make it impossible not to! She is a bit braver in her cage, where she’ll make soft eye contact, accept treats, and come out with a bit of coaxing. She is very quick to relieve herself outside and is reported to be fully housebroken. She only pulls on the leash when there’s something to run from, like garbage blowing in the wind or an approaching admirer. When I take her in the yard she paces, but will occasionally approach and accept petting. Despite being so scared I haven’t seen her show any signs of aggression. When we met a dog through the fence she briefly wiggled her tail, then quickly remembered she needed to focus on wanting to be anywhere else. Her previous owner describes her as very shy with strangers, but affectionate towards her family. She is said to be quiet, have a low activity level, and be well behaved when left alone….a gal that doesn’t ask for much but will give so much in return! Each time I take her out I fall for her even more, and I can see that I am slowly becoming a familiar face. How lucky the person will be that becomes Baby’s most favorite face!! Please come meet her at Brooklyn ACC and see if that might be you!
02/19/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Baby previously lived with an adult and has been exposed to children. The owner stated Baby has been around children but ignores them. The owner describes Baby as affectionate and mellow. The owner mentioned Baby is house trained; crate trained and does well for 8 hours, has a medium activity and well behaved when home alone. It was reported by the owner Baby is very quiet and keeps to herself most of the time. The owner stated Baby is mild fearful towards strangers but would approach them slowly. At intake it was reported Baby was fearful with her tail tucked, she would approach the counselor slowly with her body low. She allowed all handling. During SAFER Baby came into the assessment room fearful and timid, she was shy but social towards the assessor with a slow approach. She allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Baby follows the handler with her body low and fearful during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Baby was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Baby has been showing fearful behavior and avoids interaction in the care center. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Baby is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and baby be given the opportunity to interact at her own pace. The behavior department feels she can be suitable for an experience adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Baby greets with a nervous posture, tucked tail and body, ears back and hesitant to sniff. She does loosen up a bit when in direct contact with the helper dog and is tolerant of play soliciations but does not reciprocate or engage in play.
