02/03/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/03/16 13:05 Basic info: Baby is a 3 year old Shih Tzu. His former owners brought him to MACC because they live in a small studio apartment and can no longer care for him. They said his behavior over the past few months has gotten really bad. He goes to the bathroom in the house and snaps at them when they try to clean him. He was last seen by a vet in October. Socialization: Baby loves his family and is okay with strangers outside the home. When the former owners would have friends over he would try to bite them. Baby does not like small spaces (like the studio). Baby likes to play with his owners. He will run and jump when they come home. He loves to sleep on his owners in bed. Baby is somewhat tolerant of kids. He has spent a good amount of time with two 12 year old boys. He plays with them and lets them pet him. Baby doesn’t like if the kids get too rough with him. He will snap. Baby might do best in a home with no kids of any age. The former owner’s sister has a Lab and that dog would play with Baby often. They got along really well. He has never been around cats. Behavior History: Baby has bitten his owner once before. It was in December of last year. The owner was sleeping and rolled over and accidently kicked Baby and he bit him on the wrist. He has never bitten another animal. The dog does not like fireworks, thunderstorms or loud noises. He will hide and be afraid. Baby does not seem to mind when his owner touches his food bowl while he is eating. Baby DOES NOT like the idea of baths. His former owner used to be able to give him baths but now if he does Baby will snap at him. The owner now takes him to the vet/groomer and they have to use anesthesia For a new family to know: Baby is very loving and friendly to the people he knows well. Baby can also be more nervous and anxious. He is a pretty low activity dog. When his owners are home with him Baby likes to follow close behind and relax on top of them. Baby has never been crate trained. He never chews up anything or destroys the apartment when he is left alone. He only goes to the bathroom indoors because his owners said he won’t let them take him out. Baby is accustomed to eating chicken, liver and other human foods. Behavior during intake: This dog sat quietly on his owner’s lap during the interview process. The owner said that the dog tends to get nervious very easily. The owner was able to collar the dog with no problem but the dog did snap when the aco put a new rope on.

02/07/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Baby walks with a low fearful body language on leash. He was extremely fearful and repeatedly attempted to get away from the handler. Baby has been showing fearful behavior (body stiff, low body, tail tucked, and lips slightly curled) and avoids interaction in the care center. Due to the behavior demonstrated in the shelter the behavior department believes that Baby is not an appropriate candidate for SAFER at this time. Baby was surrendered to us. According to his previous owner Baby loves his family and is okay with strangers outside the home. Baby interacted well with a Labrador. However, Baby would “try to bite” the owner’s friends when they visited the house. He spent time with two 12 year old boys, playing with them and allowing them to pet him. However, he would snap if he was played with too roughly. His previous owners feel that Baby will be most comfortable in a home without children of any age. Baby may also snap when bathed. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home.
