A volunteer writes: “No one puts Baby in the corner”, and indeed our little baby will be happy in your lap giving kisses or playing with a toy, or going for a nice walk (she has lovely leash manners and seems housetrained), … anything but a corner! She deserves center stage!! She’s tiny, nicely groomed, sweet, calm and friendly, a bit shy which is completely endearing and you know you have a victory when you see her little tail wag! Baby sits for treats and when she sees the camera, but politely refused my treats when they weren’t to her liking. So cute! Off leash Baby comes when called, played tug with me, and came into my lap for some cuddling. Her black coat shines, her weight is perfect, and little white socks on all four paws complete her ensemble. An absolute delight, itty bitty Baby is waiting to meet you to begin her happily ever after. Don’t make her wait long.
BEHAVIOR
Baby came in as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. She was calm and quiet upon intake. Baby was quiet and allowed all handling during her initial medical exam. She walked very well on leash, no pulling. Baby allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, body neutral. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, ears and tail neutral, mouth closed. She followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft, tail wagging. Baby pulled her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, sniffing assessor’s hand on second attempt. Baby playfully engaged with Toy but only briefly, relinquishing quickly and easily. She approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, tail at spine level. The Behavior Team feels Baby would do well in an Average home.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw, licks hand.
Toy 1. Dog playfully engages briefly, will relinquish toy to you.
Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip neutral
Group Behavior:
When off leash with other dogs, Baby stands tall, hackles raised when greeted by a male greeter dog. When the greeting lingers Baby barks and growls at the helper dog, pursuing him when he walks away.
