11/11/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Babushka and Bonzai were brought to us as their owner passed away. Babushka was very timid at first then opened up within a few days, coming forward to her door when asked for a walk.. She has nothing in common with a babushka as she is still young and quite lively. Of note is that she wears a scarf around her neck and not on her head… Like her housemate, Babushka has been very well cared for, looks healthy and is perfectly dressed. She so reminds me of an Easter chocolate rabbit. Babushka pulls a little on the leash and does her business on the way. She does not mind other dogs met in the street, wags her tail at another female on the other side of our pen but is very shy in playgroups with her peers. Babushka can sit on command and absolutely loves treats of all kinds. Food , as so often broke the ice between us. She pays a lot of attention to what is going on around her but will come when called and even hops on the bench for caresses. Babushka is a work in process. I hope to see more of her progresses and discover her hidden talents. Babushka is at the Manhattan Care Center hoping that sooner her life will straighten up and bring peace and happiness to her heart.
11/08/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/8/16 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful, her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body tense, mouth closed. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Babushka was fearful during her assessment but allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: 11/8: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Babushka is nervous and avoids approach. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/7/16 During her initial medical exam Babushka was very tense and nervous. ENERGY LEVEL: IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Though observed to be human-social, Babushka may need time to warm up to the handler as she initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. We recommend allowing Babushka to interact at her own pace, force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing her to new/unfamiliar situations. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with some previous amount of dog experience)
11/08/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Babushka has been nervous during interaction, although beginning to allow approach from other calm dogs. She arrived to the care center with a male dog, but as a stray, so any interactions are unknown. Based on observation observed in our care, the behavior department feels that Babushka would be most comfortable with slow introductions to other calm dogs. 11/8: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Babushka is nervous and avoids approach. 11/9: Babushka keeps to herself, and continues to appear nervous, though tolerates approach from calm dogs. 11/11-12: Babushka turns her head away when approached by playful dogs and spends her time exploring the yard.
