07/29/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: ‘He’s a good boy,’ a staff member assures me while I stand by Axis’ kennel reading his less-than-stellar behavior evaluation, and I can see the truth for myself as treats are delicately eaten from my hand and a happy tail thumps against the wall in anticipation of walkies. Axis leashes up easily then speeds out the door, heading straight for the street and freedom to do the ‘business’ (both numbers!) he’s clearly been holding for quite some time. He enjoys soft, slow petting, trots politely by my side and listens attentively to my voice, but when we see a little dog walking toward us, Axis barks up a storm to make it clear he’s not a fan. So we keep our distance and get on with the very important business of sniffing around trees and garbage cans instead. When it’s time for his photo shoot, this silver fox really turns on the charm, it’s almost like he knows how handsome he is! He comes when called, sits on command, softly takes more treats and enjoys some gentle head petting. When I bring out a ‘high value’ squeaky toy, Axis has little interest and isn’t at all bothered if I pick it up from under his nose, but he did show some potential for guarding during his behavior assessment, and may need a brush-up on his sharing skills once settled in with his new family. He would shine brightest in a calm, structured home where he’ll get plenty of exercise and attention, a safe place where he can take things at his own careful pace. Axis is a beautiful grey palette just waiting for some skilled, loving hands to turn him into a masterpiece…
07/27/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Axis pulls a bit on the leash. He was tense during handling stands tall and square. His tail perpendicular to spine, mouth closed for the majority of assessment item. Axis showed some concerning during the tag interaction: growled. the behavior team decided to skip the handling part of the assessment for safety reasons. During the toy portion of the assessment, Axis was growling, but did not escalate to a snap or bite to the assess-a-hand. Axis does not approach other dog, attempts to exit. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 3. Dog stands tall and square.
