01/28/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Avon is the most beautiful girl with such a soft personality! When I first approached her cage she was vocal, but in retrospect she must’ve just been telling me how she couldn’t wait to meet me! She thrives on human contact and wants nothing more than to hug (she’ll gently prop her paws up on me and seems like she could stay there forever!), kiss, and wag her tail as she tells me, with her eyes this time, how happy she is to be at my side. Occasionally she’s had moments where she seems a little unsure and very submissive, but overall she’s been wiggly and incredibly affectionate. To boot, she is very intelligent and well-mannered. She’s easy on leash, appears housebroken, is very treat motivated, and already knows “sit” and “paw” (though the latter often turns into an excuse for another hug!). When we met another dog through a fence she was wiggly, and finding the yard blanketed with a foot of snow sent her into the zoomies, but even with other things to be excited about, she still seems most excited about her person! She can’t wait to find one to call her own — please come meet this most wonderful lady at the Manhattan ACC!
01/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Avon came in as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. Upon intake Avon was reported to be nervous and tense. She allowed limited handling with a slow approach. When entering the behavior room Avon did so with shy but calm body language and seemed to be affectionate towards the assessor. She allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without issue, and was relaxed during the tag interaction. She proved easy to handle when engaged with the toy item, but only displayed minimal interest. Avon appears to be sociable and did not display any behavior concerns during SAFER. The behavior department believes that Avon can go to a home with an adopter that has an average amount of dog experience. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, or low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Dog licks hand. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Dog licks hand. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away. When off leash with other dogs, Avon greets with a stiff body. Once she enters the pen and is off leash, Avon engages in brief play but ebbs towards being overly assertive and pushy.
