12/16/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Look at that face! That pout. That bruised expression. Such a mush!! She is a must to meet! Avocado is so endearing. I really want to spend time with her. She is still wary, though and very hesitant to come out of her kennel. After a lot of begging, lovely Avocado decides to step out of her den, which she does in very slow motion. One step forward and two backward. Eventually, we make it to the yard where she can ambulate freely in a pen. Avocado loves treats, which helps a lot in getting her to trust me. She is so shy, but such a good girl who loves caresses, and is trying very hard to be brave. With her peers, too, she is very timid, but tries to live up to our expectations, which is to play with her friends. Avocado was better at our second outing. She realizes that we can be friends. We walk half a block , which allows her to relieve herself, get some turkey jerkies and well deserved petting. Avocado is an adorable gal who seems to have been well cared for. She is shy but coming along and feels good in the company of people and dogs alike. A home sweet home and the love of a human will just be what she needs to get her out of her shy shell. Avocado is at the Manhattan Care Center. She dreams to be safe with you and to be your loving and loyal forever best friend.
12/14/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Toy: 2. No interest Summary: Avocado displayed social behavior towards the assessor and handler upon a slow/soft approach. She was a bit fearful and trembled throughout handling, wary of any sudden/challenging movement though tolerated all without issue. Avocado may benefit best from an experienced adopter who will allow her the time and space to acclimate; a period of decompression is highly advised. PLAYGROUP: 12/14: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Avocado is initially nervous in the pen. She begins to open up and offer brief sniffs to the other dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/12/16 During her initial medical exam Avocado appeared very tense and nervous. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful (The behavior department recommends allowing Avocado to approach her potential new adopters at her own pace. Avocado appears to easily startle upon loud noises/sudden movements, for this reason we advise against a home with young children at this time. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Avocado to new and unfamiliar situations.)
12/14/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
