08/05/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Ears!! With the best looking bunny ears ever, Augy is patiently waiting in the front in her kennel, hoping she’ll be the next walk. As I just can’t resist a pretty face, especially those imploring eyes, out we go. Augy makes going potty her first priority (no wonder her eyes were begging) and then shows off lovely leash manners as we head to the park. She’s an itty bitty thing, sweet, gentle, alert, and curious about everything going on in the park. Wagging her tail as two dogs (one big, one small) passed us by, in her first playgroup she greeted the male greeter dog politely but didn’t engage. Miss Augy wasn’t into snuggling today — maybe just too hot, and if and when she’s ready to cuddle she’ll let you know, and she’s perfectly lap sized! Cutie patootie Augy is hoping you’ll stop by to meet her and take her for a walk with staff. She’s waiting.
08/06/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/3/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/6/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is a bit tense, her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 5. Dog snaps. Toy: 4. Dog growls. Summary: Augy became uncomfortable when her paw was touched, snapping at the assessor. She growled when the hand touched the toy she was engaged with. PLAYGROUP: Augy has begun to display interest in socializing and engaging in play with dogs once given time to warm up. History around dogs is unknown due to arriving as a stray. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Augy and social, respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Augy was growling and allowed minimal handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/3/17 During her initial medical exam, Augy was tense and snapped. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Augy so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a medium level of activity.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to handling and resource guarding concerns, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Augy has displayed handling concerns, snapping when her paw was touched, and resource guarding concerns at the care center. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: In the care center, Augy has been observed to growl when people walk by her when she is engaged with a treat. On her assessment, she growled when in possession of the toy. We recommend that Augy be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in her future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Augy’s mouth, and any time something is removed she should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. She should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Augy snapped on her assessment when her paw was handled, showing discomfort with touch in certain areas. It is important to avoid touching Augy’s paws at this time and to be cautious when touching her in other areas as we do not know where she may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Augy to be more comfortable with this.
