04/25/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/25/17 19:37 August is a one year old female sharpei/am pitt bull mix. Her owners got her from Florida from a man whose dogs had puppies. Her owners have to move into a shelter and have to surrender August. She has no injuries, but does have a sore on the bottom of her chin, which started 5 days ago. She was last at the vet when she was 2 months old. Around strangers August is friendly/outgoing. She will bark at first but then is friendly. She has lived with a newborn, and a 6&7 year old. She is relaxed, playful and respectful of them. She plays with adults and children exuberantly and gently. She has spent time with two small dogs in the home and was very tolerant and relaxed with them. She also spent time with a Rottweiler with whom she was relaxed with and played exuberantly with. In general she plays with dogs exuberantly. She has not spent time with cats or other pets at home. When she sees stray cats, she tries to chase them. She has never bitten a person or another animal. August will poop and pee inside when she is with other dogs who do as well. She isn’t bothered when someone takes away her bowl while eating/ take a bone away/ takes a toy away/is pushed or pulled off furniture/is held or restrained/ is disturbed while sleeping/gets a bath/gets a nail trim. She loves getting brushed. She will bark when someone unfamiliar approaches her family member or house, but is also friendly. Her owners describe her as friendly, affectionate, playful, and confident. Her activity level is high. Her owners love that she loves to be with them all the time and is a good listener. August loves to play with bones and toys and be with her owners. At home, she’ll follow them around everywhere. She loves all toys that are hard, and that she can rip up. She plays tug and fetch. She has been kept mostly indoors. She sleeps in her owner’s bedroom or in her cage. She loved wet&dry food mixed together. She eats all brands 2xday. She is mostly housetrained and can have accidents daily. She goes potty on the cement and is well-behaved when left alone. She does well in a crate up to 9hrs. She knows “sit, stay, come, toy, paw”. For exercise she likes brisk walks on leash and off leash dog parks. She pulls hard on the leash and when off leash will wander but comes when called. During intake, August snapped, growled, and lunged at counselor so counselor did not handle.
03/06/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: When our beautiful blonde August’s family lost their home, August also lost everything she held dear. Her human parents, her three human siblings ages 6,7, and newborn, and two small dogs with whom she was playful, relaxed and tolerant. Her Shar Pei heritage showing clearly in her adorable face, she can be a bit shy and aloof until she gets to know someone. August and I made friends immediately. Easily leashed she hopped out of her kennel, wagged her tail and we head for the door. Her tail wags as we walk, and when we stop for some photos she allows a neckpiece over her head, and then does the most extraordinary head tilt when I make kissy noises at her. Talk about concentration! August then further wows me with her ‘sit’, and ‘paw’ and how gently she takes treats. We cuddle a bit, August in my lap, her small size a perfect fit. We’re told from her former family that she doesn’t guard her things, loves hard toys, loves being with her family, is crate trained and mostly housetrained. She’s smart, focused and loves treats so any additional training should be easy with consistency and positive reinforcement. When our walk was over Miss August hopped right back into her kennel with a wag of her tail. Ready to win any beauty pageant, any personality contest, Miss August is ready to declare March the winner. The month she finds a new family to love. Don’t pass her by.
04/26/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 3/1/2017 Unaltered female, owner surrender (lived in previous home for 1 year) Previously lived with: Adults, newborn, 6 and 7 year old child. Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and outgoing Behavior toward children: Relaxed, playful and respectful of the children in the home. Behavior toward dogs: Exuberant Behavior toward cats: Tries to chase cats when she sees them Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: No Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, playful, and confident with a high activity level. Other notes: August does well in a crate for up to 9 hours. August barked at staff with a stiff body during intake. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 04/26/17 Summary: While she has allowed some handling some select caretakers, August remains uncomfortable with interaction in the care centers and will display defensive behavior if any attempts to engage are made; lunging, growling, hard barking. She watches and tracks the humans around her carefully at all times. Due to the behaviors observed, and out of concern for her stress level, we do not feel it is appropriate to perform a handling assessment at this time. Please review the full owner surrender profile for information on August’s behavior in her previous home as a guideline. PLAYGROUP: PLAYGROUP: August has displayed interest in engaging in play with dogs in the care center, after an initial period of needing time to warm up and become comfortable. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between August and respectful dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 03/01/17 During her initial medical examination, August was fearful and growled. ENERGY LEVEL: Her previous owners describe August as having a high activity level. This does not match what we have seen in the care center, as August is avoidant of interaction with staff with relatively low energy.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): August has shown a number of warning and distance-increasing behaviors to different handling triggers. Due to these behaviors we recommend an experienced adopter and an adult-only home. _X_No cats: Owner reports August tries to chase cats she sees. We recommend a home with no cats. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: August has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a new Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_House soiling: August is said to have accidents in the house. She will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend continuing crate training, frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside (treats, toys, games) and consistent feeding schedule. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: August has attempted to snap during her stay in our care centers when uncomfortable; guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Sasha to new and unfamiliar situations. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: August has attempted to lunge at passerby on leash and is highly uncomfortable with most forms of approach, we recommend safe and appropriate management when attempting to modify this behavior. _X_Kennel presence
03/03/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
August has displayed interest in engaging in play with dogs in the care center, after an initial period of needing time to warm up and become comfortable. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between August and respectful dogs. 3/3: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, August greets politely, though mostly keeps to herself post-greeting. 4/27: August is initially cautious and takes a moment to warm up. She engages in soft, bouncy play with males and females once comfortable.
