Atkins
Hello, my name is Atkins. My animal id is #12551. I am a desexed male black dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a returns on 12-Dec-2017.
Atkins is at risk due to being diagnosed with Canine Infection Respiratory Disease Complex and will likely require home rest and a series of antibiotics for up to 14 days. This is a contagious illness to other dogs. Atkins is suitable for an average or experienced pet owner.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: I’m pretty sure Atkins is the sweetest little man in the entire universe! He was named after the street he was found curled up on, but has since spent time in a home and his person confirms that he is friendly, affectionate and (bonus!) mellow. He has been very easy to walk on leash, can be timid if there is lots of commotion, seems very housebroken, and does “sit” and “down” for treats. As soon as I let him off leash he initiates THE most endearing version of the zoomies — it’s like he’s one of those old-fashioned spinning top toys made of tin or wood. Round and round he goes until usually landing at my feet where he flops over on his side (he is still a teeny tiny bit bashful and not ready to go all the way belly up yet!), it’s so sweet! His eyes all but speak, he gives kisses like a gentleman, and is the perfect size to hang out in your lap. Plus if I give him a pile of treats he has an adorable habit of taking them one at a time to his bed where he eats them and then hops back down to get a refill. I have a feeling that whoever takes him home is going to wonder how they ever got by without him…we hope you’ll come meet him at Brooklyn ACC! A staff member writes: Meet Atkins. Unlike the diet, Atkins will fatten you up with love. The perfect day for this guy is spending time lounging around on the couch, with his feet up and belly ready for rubs. Atkins’s superpower include, warming your heart, making you laugh, and curling his whole body into your lap. He prefers that you take time getting to know him, he is a shy guy. If you love the same interest as Atkins, than he is waiting for you at Animal Care Centers in Brooklyn New York.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: Atkins seems a bit uncomfortable with quick movements and may be most comfortable in a home without very young children, particularly until the reason for his crying out when picked up is determined. Dog-savvy young children can be considered pending interaction. He otherwise shows good coping skills, even when uncomfortable, and has been quite human social with his caretakers in the care center.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: The behavior department recommends allowing Atkins to approach his potential new adopters at his own pace. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Atkins to new and unfamiliar situations.
