09/17/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: This silky delight is such an amazing (and obvious) family dog he should be off on location filming a Disney movie rather than hanging out on 110th street with the likes of us! But how delighted we are to have this sliver of time with him, knowing he is about to go on to a wonderful forever family. We know this because who could possibly resist a beauty of a dog who is perfect on a leash, appears house trained, is calm and sweet and waggy around all dogs and squirrels and people, and remains utterly unperturbed even when the noise level rises in the shelter? He knows “sit” and “paw,” and we have a feeling that is just the beginning of his tricks. We know for sure it’s just the beginning of his charm. Atari is an irresistible magical dog waiting for his magical people!
09/18/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 09/18/2016 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. 1: 4. Dog freezes and growls. Summary: Atari displayed social behavior towards his handlers throughout the assessment though displayed a potential for resource guarding as he became stiff and growled when the toy he had was touched. PLAYGROUP: 09/18/16: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Atari initially displays sexually motivated behaviors (he is currently unaltered). When solicited with play, Atari reciprocates playful behavior, however with intent to mount. The behavior team feels that Atari should require in-depth consultation on the behaviors observed in our care center, and slow introduction with any resident dogs in a future home. Atari arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs, and it is unknown how his behavior around dogs will translate into a home setting. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 09/16/16 During his initial medical examination, Atari allowed all handling but jumpy at times, responds well to commands (paw, sit, lay down) RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13) _ Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Atari has displayed resource guarding behavior in shelter; see SAFER assessment. Because of this reason, we advise against a home with children until this behavior can be further assessed/managed in the home. The behavior department recommends never removing an item from Atari’s mouth without trading for something of equal value; force-free, reward based training is advised.)
