Basic Information:: Asmadeus is a 3 year old, black and white medium mixed breed male. He was neutered prior to coming into the shelter, and has no known health issues or injuries. He has been in his home since he was a young puppy and was surrendered due to personal health issues in his owners life. He has not see a vet recently.
Previously lived with:: In home with owner
How is this dog around strangers?: Asmadeus is gated off to a section of the house due to behavioral concerns with strangers, so he does not approach or interact with them. He will alert bark and growl when someone is at the door and enters.
How is this dog around children?: Asmadeus has not interacted or lived with children
How is this dog around other dogs?: Asmadeus lived with his sister in his previous home and their interactions are scattered. Most of the time they co-exist well, but his owner has reported incidents where play time became aggressive and they have fought with each other before. He has not interacted with any other dogs but will bark and growl at ones he passes on the street when being walked.
How is this dog around cats?: Asmadeus has not spent time or lived with any cats.
Resource guarding:: Asmadeus will growl and snap at his owner or family member if they reach for his food bowl, or try to take a treat or object from his mouth.
Bite history:: Asmadeus has no bite history but he has snapped at family members before.
Housetrained:: Partially
Energy level/descriptors:: High
Other Notes:: Due to his owners erratic schedule, and she is the only person the dog will allow close, he has accidents daily in the house because he is not let out often enough.
Has this dog ever had any medical issues?: No
Medical Notes: None
For a New Family to Know: Asmadeus is described as being excitable and unpredictable. He has snapped at family members that he is familiar with and interacted with every day. His owner has bathed him but he will struggle to get out of the tub. He also will struggle when she tries to brush him, and only the vet has trimmed his nails. He will bark and growl when someone approaches the house and yard. He is kept gated off so he is not able to follow his family around when they are home, he has been an indoor dog and sleeps in his crate. He eats dry food and his favorite treats are milk bones. He slow walks on a leash for exercise and does pull hard. He does not know any commands. He likes to play with balls, stuffed toys, and chew bones.
Date of intake:: 11/6/2017

Date of assessment:: 11/14/2017
Look:: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, body posture is stiff and fearful, tail is low and not moving. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity:: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, tail is between legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick.
Tag:: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have a long lip or lip lick.
Summary:: 11/8/17 First SAFER attempt: Asmadeus appears to be uncomfortable or afraid of the slip lead. He has also allowed minimal handling from his caretakers. Asmadeus would cry and whine when his kennel is approached, during playgroup, and when attempting a handling assessment. He tries to exit several times out the room and pulls on the leash to flee. Out of concern for his stress levels and his response to restraint, we feel Asmadeus is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. Please see his owner surrender profile for a full summary of his behavior in his previous home. 11/14/17 Asmodeus was re-SAFER’d today, he still remained fearful with his body low, tail tucked and ears back. He allowed minimal handling and didn’t complete the full assessment but didn’t show any aggression towards the handlers.
Summary (1):: Asemadeus is extremely fearful around other dogs; shutting down and shaking in the corner. He allows other dogs to greet him, but does not exchange sniffs. He lived with her brother in her previous home and their interactions are scattered. Most of the time they co-existed well, but her owner reported incidents where play time they became over-aroused and would fight. She has not interacted with any other dogs but will bark and growl at ones he passes on the street when being walked. The Behavior Department believes that Asmadeus would be most comfortable as the only dog in the home. Any resident dogs should be polite and respectful. All introductions should be conducted slowly and be under supervision. 11/07: When off leash at the Care Center, Asmadeus is extremely nervous and does not interact with the helper dog at all. He stands at the gate, whining with a tucked posture. 11/08: Asmadeus continued to stand by the gate, with a tucked tail and visibly shaking body when introduced to a novel male dog. 11/09: Today Asmadeus is slightly more confident around his sibling. He displays a soft body, and explores the pens while occasionally checking in with the other dogs in the group. 11/1 11/14: Asmadeus interacts with a social female today. He follows her around the yard, exploring where ever she does.
Date of intake:: 11/6/2017
Summary:: No handling done during intake.
Date of initial:: 11/6/2017
Summary:: Timid, nervous but allows handling
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Although Asmadeus remains fearful overall while here at the Care Center, he has warmed up to a few of his caretakers, soliciting attention, leaning in to all handling and even laying down to accept belly rubs.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Asmadeus is reported to be partially housetrained. He will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend crate training (the crate must be made positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside (treats, toys, games), consistent feeding schedule, and careful monitoring when inside. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. Resource Guarding: Asmodeus is reported to growl and snap over food. He should be left alone while eating, and should be taught the cue “drop” and other trade up games so Asmodeus learns that dropping food or having people around while he is eating is rewarding. Behavior modification protocols for food guarding behavior can be found on aspcapro.org Fearful: Though observed to be human-social, Asmodeus may need time to warm up to the handler as he initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. We recommend allowing Asmodeus to interact at his own pace, force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing him to new/unfamiliar situations.
