07/11/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/11/16 13:49 Ashby A1080817 is a young male all white Dogo Argentino mix who was found in front of the finder’s residence earlier today in the Bronx. They stated he was friendly and walked up to them. They aren’t able/willing to keep Ashby and brought him in to us at the BXAC. During intake Ashby initially had a loose wiggly body however as I approached him he barked, lunged and snapped at me. The finder assisted with scanning (-), collaring and taking his picture. As I sat uploading his photos he jumped up and placed his paws on the counter and whimpered (perhaps for me to give him attention) and I did then he quickly moved back and down to the ground. Ashby was then lifted but he half jumped up onto the transport van heading to the Manhattan shelter.

07/15/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Ashby came into the care center as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He has shown a range of behaviors thus far in the care center, loose and wiggly with his finder during intake but lunging and snapping when approached by the Admissions Counselor. He later briefly sought attention from the same counselor. He was active and nervous during his initial medical examination. He allowed collaring and has gone into playgroup several times; he has avoided interaction with and attention from other dogs, but copes well by moving away and increasing distance. After several trips in he has begun to loosen up. Ashby was brought into the SAFER room but growled at the Assessor, sitting in the seat, at the start of the assessment. Due to his discomfort interacting with a new person and his request to increase distance, handling items were skipped. Ashby snapped when the toy was moved. Due to the range of behaviors shown, including discomfort with close proximity and clear warning signs, and inability to complete the SAFER handling, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide reward-based behavior modification to address his anxiety around new people and help him gain confidence with positive experiences. Toy: 4. Dog growls and snaps. Dog-dog: Ashby has not been completely comfortable when interacting, however has shown brief interest in soliciting. Ashby should be allowed time to warm up in a new home before immediate introduction to unfamiliar dogs. He arrived as a stray so in home behavior is unknown.
