06/23/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Ready to party? Meet Artie! Ready for tricks and treats and joy and laughter? Hmmm, well, still meet Artie. With a face like a fox and a frame like a thoroughbred, Artie is a feast for the eyes. To snuggle against that coat be it winter or spring? Well, that would set anyone smiling. But Artie’s not just about looks, no, no. This boy is all about charm (well and the tricks and the joy and the laughter). And from the moment you meet him you’ll find yourself feeling lighter and struggle to figure out why. The first “why” starts with “z” and that stands for “zoomies”, something Artie gets early and often. Find some grass, toss a ball, and watch this fox-hybrid race about like it’s a day at Churchill Downs. Speaking of: 1 year-old Artie could easily attend an event such as that, so full of surprising manners is he. “Sit, “down,” and, best of all, “paw” are all firmly in his understated repertoire, and he’s eager to show them all off. Another “why” when explaining why it is that you love Artie would be “wags,” “bows,” and “licks.” (Wait, is that three?) So ready to make new friends is Artie Party that he smothers a recent neighbor with all three through the pen (in that order) right at the moment he meets him. Why else do you love Artie? Besides good looks, manners, an endless sense of joy and fun, and a love for all his fellow neighbors? Well, that he’s ready for love. Ready for a family all his own. And that he’ll promise to love you forever. Artie is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan ACC.
06/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 6/18/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/20/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up on and mouths the assessor. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Arties displayed a high level of activity on his assessment. He was social throughout and jumped up on the assessor repeatedly in an attention seeking manner. He became mouthy, applying only light pressure. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Social: These dogs truly enjoy the company of other dogs. They generally get along with all other dogs and can tolerate even very rude or inappropriate behavior. PLAYGROUP: Artie plays exuberantly with other dogs in the care center. He engages in running chase play with male and female dogs. The behavior department feels Artie may be most compatible with other dogs who are social and playful. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake Artie allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/19/17 During his initial medical exam, Artie allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Artie so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center he has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
