12/16/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: His namesake is a delicate, somewhat fancy food, so it was with a laugh that I met our own Artichoke, a lovable 90 pound bundle of macho muscle and enthusiastic energy. A fine dining companion he’s not, but if you’re looking for someone to run, play and jump your way through life with, then Artichoke is definitely your boy! He’s friendly with people and dogs alike, seems extremely house trained, and knows how to sit for treats and take them like a gentleman. His leash walking style needs some work, but being smart and food-motivated, I’ve no doubt he’ll be a quick learner. And to judge by his eager pulling toward an open car door, it seems he already knows the thrill of car trips, too. For an active big dog connoisseur or an experienced adopter looking for a smart, handsome diamond in the rough, this is an opportunity not to miss. Ask to meet Artichoke today!
12/13/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray Other notes: Upon intake Artichoke had a loose, wiggly body. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, bit distracted. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Artichoke displayed a very high level of energy throughout his assessment. He was jumping up on, licking, and mouthing the Assessor and had difficulty settling. He may do best with an adopter who can provide daily physical exercise and mental stimulation. He would benefit from positive reinforcement training to learn basic manners. PLAYGROUP: When greeting a male dog through a barrier Artichoke is tense and does not walk away until called away. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/12/16 During his initial medical exam Artichoke appeared tense and nervous but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.) _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition (Decreasing the force of the mouth as well as the frequency of mouthing, in this order is recommended by using force-free, reward based training as well to reinforce a soft appropriate mouth and redirect hard inappropriate mouthing onto toys.) _X_ No dog parks (see playgroup notes. Artichoke may not be appropriate at this time to interact in an off leash setting with unfamiliar/high volume of dogs).
12/16/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
12/19: When inntroduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Artichoke appears highly aroused and slightly tense upon entering the pen. He follows the female greeter dog while sniffing intently at her rear end. When the female dog spins around to solicit play instead, Artichoke reciprocates with a bit of playful body language. Artichoke offers brief bows, and follows after the greeter dog. He quickly becomes tense and frustrated as the other dog continues to attempt to play, and begins to vocalize and growl. He begins to vocalize and air-snap at the greeter dog when handlers attempt to separate her from the pen. Due to lack of history available, and behavior observed durin this interaction, the behavior department feels that Artichoke should be the only resident dog in a home until his behavior can be followed up on outside the care center.
