04/08/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Armadillos usually come dressed in a hard protective armor, but not this gorgeous hunk. He’s a soft, snuggly sweetheart from handsome head to white-tipped toe! So gentle and so loving, Armadillo’s reserved smile breaks into a grin as he whines and pulls to greet his fellow pups on the street, but it’s not until he gets together with girlfriend, Koala (A1069143), that the happy wiggles and helicopter tail truly go into overdrive. A butt-sniffing good time is had by all and someone has really missed hanging out with the playmate and BFF he’s not seen since they arrived together as ‘strays’. Both dogs are absolutely beautiful, well-fed and well-trained (though Armadillo is strong and pulls a bit on leash) and it’s clear they’ve known what it means to have a home and live as the sort of good, loving pets any family would be thrilled to call their own. Armadillo seems to be house trained, comes and sits on command, takes treats very gently and really enjoys being petted, resting his head on my lap and nuzzling close for comfort like the big baby he is. If you love the great outdoors yet yearn for sofa snuggles too, Armadillo brings it all together in one hunky package, and this grey’n’white cutie can’t wait to get smoochy with you…and maybe a doggy girlfriend too? Armadillo is a special boy, and he’s ready and waiting for his happy ending at our Manhattan Care Center. Please don’t make him wait too long…
04/05/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Armadillo pulls a bit on the leash. He is fearful of the shelter environment he walks with a low and fearful body language. He was fearful and repeatedly attempted to get away from the handler during the assessment. Armadillo had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. He was not interested in toys. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Armadillo is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Armadillo is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. The behavior department advises that future adopters should be able to provide positive experiences for Armadillo. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Armadillo be given the opportunity to interact at their own pace. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1. No interest. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Armadillo is cautious while in the yard environment, but doess approach to sniff the female greeter. He begins to show increasingly sexually motivated behavior and persistantly attempts to mount.
04/04/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Armadillo has mostly exhibited sexually motivated behaviors when interacting with females (he has not yet been introduced to a male). He arrived at the care center with a female dog, but as strays so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction before placing Armadillo into a home with other dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Armadillo is cautious while in the yard environment, but doess approach to sniff the female greeter. He begins to show increasingly sexually motivated behavior and persistantly attempts to mount. 4/5 update: Armadillo is a bit sexually motivated, and roams the pen while “chattering” and sniffing. 4/7 update: Armadillo offers polite greeting, mostly keeping to himself and snifing his surroundings.
