08/27/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “He’s a big one, isn’t he?”, said another volunteer as I was leading Arizona out of his kennel. Yes, he sure is! He’s a hunk, a stud muffin, a steam roller—–the quarterback of the football team if he were a person. He’s absolutely gorgeous in his slate grey coat, wagging tail and expressive eyes. There’s something about his gaze….all knowing….intelligent…..as if he knows what I’m thinking even before I think it. Arizona seems to be housetrained, using the ‘facilities’ as soon as we were out the door and does pull on the leash as we walk to the park. Z (for short) doesn’t mind being tethered for photos and that’s where his all knowing ‘look’ came into play – ‘I know you need me to look smart and handsome for my photos – how am I doing?’ his gaze seems to ask. And of course I tell him he’s amazing! Z takes treats gently, laps up some water from a bowl I bring to the park, and walks more easily back to the building. Once inside he plays briefly with a soft toy and lies down froggy style to rest, but his tail doesn’t rest – it keeps wagging! A big dog with a big personality, he’s also soft, gentle and friendly. In his first play date he plays with the helper dog when solicited. Z is looking for his soul mate and we’re rooting for him to find him or her today. Be sure to meet Arizona (you can call him Z) when you visit.
08/25/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Arizona came into our center as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. He was friendly during his initial medical exam, seemed to enjoy being pet by staff. He pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. Arizona held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, body wiggly. He leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, mouth open, tail wagging. Arizona followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, became playful towards end of game, body soft. He pulled his paw back on first Squeeze attempt, did not pull back on second Squeeze attempt. Arizona kept a firm grip on Toy, body not stiff. The Behavior Team feels Arizona would do best with an Experienced adopter. He will benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners, may walk best with a harness. Arizona would benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of walks, runs, exercise, and play. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze, body wiggly. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, playful towards end of game, body soft Squeeze 1: 2. Dog pulls back paw Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed Toy: 2. Dog keeps a firm grip, body not stiff. Dog-to-dog: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Arizona is initially sexually motivated (he is unaltered), however does play when solicited.
08/25/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Arizona is initially sexually motivated (*he is unaltered), however does play when solicited. Arizona arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs, and it is unknown how his/ behavior will translate into a home setting. The behavior team feels that Arizona could potentially be adopted to a home with another dog pending a successful pre adoption interaction and slow introductions.
