06/22/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Aretha is a pretty name, but Snow White would have been a better fit. Yes, Aretha is as white as snow and wears a perfect and spotless coat. Thankfully, she has lively dark eyes and a big smile letting out a pink tongue. Aretha is a young gal, only one year of age, as delicate looking and exquisitely made as a china doll, a regal for the eyes. She turns many heads on the street. She is very sociable and friendly, playful mainly with toys that she really wants to share with her caretaker. She walks well on the leash, pulling only slightly. She is a good listener, comes when called, hops on the bench, sits obediently on command and takes politely treats from my hand. Everything is done, of course, with a lot of tail wagging. Aretha does not hide her joy to be with us, humans. She is fine, polite with her peers in playgroups but mostly seeks the attention of the staff. Aretha would be perfect or almost perfect if she did not like to jump so high and energetically to express her happiness to be in company (watch out for your chin). This is one behavior that her future owner or family will want to manage. Aretha has a lot of great features to become a wonderful pet. Just ask to meet her in person, see all that she has to offer, and take her home for a life full of love and fun…Aretha is at the Manhattan Care Center.

DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Tolerant: These dogs are typically non-reactive on leash and will be either friendly or indifferent off leash. They can typically tolerate some rude behavior from other dogs and can be described as having a long fuse. They show relaxed, appropriate, easy-going body language around others. PLAYGROUP: Aretha greets other dogs politely, and engages in soft bouncy play with males and females. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Aretha and other dogs who are gently playful or tolerant. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Aretha was active, social, and allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/19/17 During her initial medical exam, Aretha was active, social, and a little anxious with restraint. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Aretha so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)
