05/26/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A kennel staff handed me Achilles.” I love this dog and he is so protective of me.”. Sure enough, Achilles was clutched to the staff member, giving him standing hugs. He would not part from him and we had to be escorted to the yard. Achilles took some interest in me, though. I guess because of the treats… roast beef is hard to resist. He tried to jump for it but obeyed quite nicely and sat on command, mouth open and bright eyes. He was quite friendly, made sweet eyes at me and accepted my caresses, coming right away when I called him and even settling by my side in recognition of my good services. Achilles is a good looking Staffie, all black but for one little white paw. Does it means that we are giving him “carte blanche”? It is not clear yet how Achilles really is with other dogs. He does pull strongly toward them and at times gives a bark. Depending on the type of life he lead and his owner’s expections, he might not have been used to finding himself amidst so many other pooches, and certainly not participating in “playdates”. And let’s not forget the “shock” of being abandoned and severed from all that and who he knew. We need to see more about Achilles who does show true love and loyalty toward us, humans. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center. Achilles is dreaming big-time to be someone’s pet again.
05/26/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Achilles pulls a bit on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Achilles followed the assessor at the end of the leash with a calm and relaxed body language when playing tag. He shows minimal interest with toys. Due to very concerning behaviors demonstrated during playgroups we recommend that Achilles be placed with a new hope partner at this time that can provide the necessary behavior modification before placement into a stable home environment. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, ears back, jumps on the assessor , wagging tail, open mouth. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog may smell or lick toy, then turn away. When walked up to the gate, Achilles stiffens, growls then begins to hard bark at the helper dog. When attempt is made to muzzle him, Achilles stiffens and eventually growls at one of the handlers. He is muzzled by a handler with whom he is more comfortable with. Once allowed in the pen, he initially sniffs the helper a few times before keeping to himself. Afterward, with no known provocation, he rushes the helper dog growling and snapping. When offered correction, he does not escalate, instead walks away, only to repeat this behavior moments later.
