Did someone let a Kangaroo loose in the yard?!! Nope, it’s just baby Archer, the ittie bittie Pittie mix who thinks he’s a Kangaroo! Adorable, friendly, obedient, naughty, nosy and rough-n-tumble in equal measure, Archer’s a dog for the big of heart, not the faint of heart. Though he found his own way to the Care Center it’s clear someone had started to teach him a thing or two about ‘good boy manners’ and after getting some zoomies out of the way he’s happy to sit and wait for a toss of the tennis ball, rushing right back and even letting me pull it straight from his mouth. Wide-eyed snuggles and ear-to-ear smiles are what time on the bench is all about but trying to keep my wriggly new buddy still for photos is a fun challenge that I don’t quite meet. Once in a harness Archer’s a good walker, keen to explore but responsive to my voice, seemingly house trained and very easy to handle. Friendly dogs are met with happy tail wags and noisy ones with a taste of their own medicine yet overall he’s a happy-go-lucky kind of guy who wants to make friends with every man, woman, child and dog he sees. Energetic puppies are not for everyone but with positive guidance and plenty of play time, our redheaded rogue will grow into a rockstar adult, all the potential is there. Archer would make a wonderful pet for an active family, come see him at our Manhattan Care Center and he’ll aim straight for your arms…and your heart.
Archer pulls a bit on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, mouthy (moderate). He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Archer was excitable, mouthy (moderate) but playful while playing tag. He took the toy with a soft body language.
Archer appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. He was very mouthy during the assessment Archer is a 6 month puppy and needs an adopter who can follow up on this behavior.
Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, mouths the hand, but does not apply pressure. Or, dog licks hands while lips are long.
Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jump on and mouth the Assessor once play begins.
Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure.
Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
Playgroup Notes:
When off leash with other dogs, Archer allows greeting, but eventually corrects solicitation with a defensive air snap.

3/24 update: Archer is vocal and pushy–he jumps onto the females in the yard while barking and mouthing, but he does respond to correction and engage in more polite play. When interacting with another male he is more uncomfortable and will only engage in very soft play when solicited.
3/24 update: Archer engages in vocal running play with males and females. Over time he does spend his time attempting to mount the female. When being walked through the yard he becomes stiff then pulls and barks at other dogs, occasionally this is his response to dogs through the gate as well, but some he greets politely.
3/26 update: Archer is mouthy when engaging in running play. He lacks appropriate social skills when interacting with older dogs.
