05/02/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Araya’s life does not seem to have been a bed of roses. Although enjoying a decent weight, her care has been poor. Her once gorgeous cinnamon coat needs major mending. Her ears are infected and appear to have been bitten. She also needs a good grooming. Now, close your eyes and just imagine how gorgeous and attractive this young lady would be, well cared for and loved…in your hands. Indeed, under her pauper’s disguise is hiding a lovely princess who could be your very dear forever best friend. Araya was a bit tense upon arrival at the care center. She quickly came out of her shell as she saw that we are friends. She got shelter and food and even company, which she seems to appreciate. Araya loves food and does not really sit for treats (well, she did just a few times). Although she located immediately my goodies bag, she did not try to “steal” and was polite taking treats from my hand. She comes when called, likes to be caressed but is a little shy around her head which is perfectly understandable. She zigzags on the leash, making me think that she could be a yard dog not used to the streets. She sniffs a lot on the way and eliminates in one sitting. Her tail goes up meeting other dogs, but she shows just a passing interest. I really like Araya: her hound’s face and soulful eyes. I would love for her to forget all about the past and look forward to a bright, happy and safe future with a caring master or family. Araya is at the Manhattan Care Center, wishing upon a star.
05/02/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Araya came into our center after a member of the public found her as a stray. During intake, Araya had stiff, tense body, though this may be due to injuries to her head, neck, and ears. She allowed all handling. Araya pulled a bit on leash for her relief walk. She held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, relaxed. Araya was difficult to position for Sensitivity item, backing away and displaying high energy and movement, but did accept the touch. She followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, not fully comfortable with the game, displacement shaking at end of item. She gently pulled her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, displacement yawning at end of item. She showed minimal interest in Toy, taking it enthusiastically but loses interest quickly. When off leash with another dog, Araya mostly runs away but may briefly sniff the helper dog. The Behavior Team feels Araya would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. She may benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction and initially going home to a calm, quiet, structured environment so she can relax and know what to expect in her new home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, backing away from assessor, but accepts the touch. Tag: 2. Dog is not comfortable, follows at the end of the leash, displacement shaking Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog gently pulls back, displacement yawning. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog enthusiastically takes Toy, quickly loses interest Dog-dog: When off leash with another dog, Araya mostly runs away but may briefly sniff the helper dog.
