07/28/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/28/17 19:57 Basic information: Aoki is a 3 yr old dog who was gotten from petfinder and was kept in the same home for the past 3yrs of his life. Unfortunately due to a new baby he could not be kept. He was last brought to the vet about a year ago for vaccinations. Socialization: Around strangers and children Aoki is described friendly/outgoing, relaxed and respectful and plays somewhat rough with them. Aoki has been socialized with other dogs and was very respectful and relaxed. He has never been socialized with cats and there’s no records of her ever biting another animal or person. Behavior: Aoki will bark frequently to alert you when someone is near and during fireworks and loud storms she becomes nervous and attempts to hide. Aoki enjoys bath time, being brushed & having his nails trimmened and is unbothered when someone attempts to touch his food, toys or treat when hes eating or being pushed off of furniture. He will however bark consistently when someone unfamiliar appaches his home. For a New Family to Know: Aoki is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, excitable, confident, independent, pushy and somewhat anxious. He has a very high activity level, enjoys belly rubs, will follow you around when home with you, likes to play with balls, bones and ropes and loves to play tug. He has been kept mostly indoors, prefers to sleep in a kennel, ate Purina dog chow 2x a day, is considered very house trained and well behaved when he is left alone at home, has been crate trained and does well overnight, likes a to be walked at least 2-3x a day, pulls lightly on leash and off leash will wander but comes when he is called. Intake: Upon intake Aoki allowed all handling, being collared and being placed in a kennel.
08/03/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Majestic is the first word that comes to my lips when I look at Aoki, a dark knight whose vibrant eyes light up his den. Aoki is statuesque, perched on long legs, trim, perfectly dressed and so patient in his kennel. I leashed him without effort and off we left for the street. The thunder surprised us and Naoki was nervous, pulling here and there. He did his business, though, without marking. We took shelter in a room where he relaxed, sat beautifully on command and of course for treats. I had to check his mouth for teeth(he owns quite nice ones) as he was so gentle taking jerkies from my hand. He accepted my caresses and was not at all bothered by the eye of my camera nor the scarf I put around his neck. No dog was met but I watched him in playgroup with two lively young females and he seemed to have a great time. Aoki’s former owner told us that he liked his own kind. I came back for Aoki a little later. He is quite a catch and left his mark on my mind. He was quite different this time, leaning on me and seeking closeness, rubbing his head against my chest. Trust had settled inside him and he was ready for companionship with someone who got his seal of approval…Aoki is with us as his family welcomed a new human baby. Although he comes with an outstanding profile, Aoki is a big and strong dog who sometimes plays rough and new parents are protective of their young offspring…Aoki(said to be a cross between a Great Dane and a Sharpei) is an outstanding dog, gorgeous, healthy, well cared for , playful and affectionate. In the right hands, he will be a very enviable, fun and loyal friend, hopefully , forever this time. Aoki is at the Manhattan Care Center.

KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Profile 1/31/17, first stay at care center Neutered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults and another dog Behavior toward dogs: Friendly with the dog he lived with SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/31/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, body tense, mouth closed. Tag: 2. Dog is focused on exit, on last pass spins towards hand and grabs the leash in his mouth. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Aoki appeared to be a bit uncomfortable with some of the positioning and handling for the assessment, pulling away from the assessor and being difficult to position. He was very focused on the exit at times. PLAYGROUP: Aoki plays exuberantly with other dogs in the care center. The previous owner cites that Aoki was “relaxed and respectful” around other dogs. The behavior department recommends slow introductions to other social or playful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Aoki allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Aoki’s previous owner described him as having a very high level of activity. He is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the discomfort Aoki displayed with some of the handling items on his assessment, we recommend a home without young children. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Aoki displayed discomfort with some of the handling on his assessment, moving away from the assessor so that he was difficult to position and becoming tense during squeeze. It is important to always go slow and give Aoki the option to walk away from any social interaction. Aoki should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Aoki’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Aoki may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
