03/28/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 03/23/17 Intact male, Stray Other notes: Upon intake, Angelo appeared frightened and growled when being placed in carrier. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 03/28/17 Summary: Angelo appears to have been poorly socialized as he attempts to flee upon any movement, subtle or not and shows little tolerance with direct touch. Because Angelo startles so easily, out of concern for his stress level, a SAFER assessment will not be performed. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Angelo solicits and engages in gentle play with male and female dogs. Angelo was brought in as a stray, so his past behavior with other dogs in unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Angelo be placed with resident dogs that match his gentle play style. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 03/24/17 During his initial medical examination, Angelo appeared quiet and tolerated all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Angelo, we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, we recommend daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Angelo displays concerning behavior, possibly due to lack of socialization/traumatic handling experiences. Because we are unsure of the depth of his fear and anxiety, we recommend immediate intervention to appropriately socialize and desensitize to novel stimuli. Angelo is likely to succeed in an experienced adult-only home with guidance and consultation from a veterinary behaviorist. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Angelo is uncomfortable with touch, making all attempts to avoid and flee from any interaction and will hide from handlers. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Angelo to be more comfortable with handling. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Angelo has been observed to growl upon some forms of handling, we recommend allowing Angelo the option to walk away from anything he uncomfortable with.
03/26/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash at the Care Center, Angelo solicits and engages in gentle play with male and female dogs. Angelo was brought in as a stray, so his past behavior with other dogs in unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Angelo be placed with resident dogs that match his gentle play style. 3/26: Angelo greets a novel male with soft body and a few bounces. He explores the pen, mostly keeping to himself, and occasionally checking in on the other dog. 3/27: Angelo greeted a female with a low, wiggly body and engaged in running chase play. He whines and whimpers the whole time while running.
