02/22/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/22/17 19:55 Basic: Angel is a 1yr 3mo old spayed lab mix. Her owners got her from ACC and have had her for 3 weeks. Her owners are surrendering because she has been displaying behaviors towards dogs in the building that have caused other residents, and her owners, concern. She will bark and lunge towards a few select dogs. She has no known illnesses or injuries and did not go for a vet visit while with her adopted family. Socialization: Around strangers Angel is outgoing and friendly. She has spent time with two children, ages 14 & 16, in the home and was relaxed with them. When a few of the children’s friends came over and they were running around and yelling, Angel did bark. She has come across other dogs in the building and hasn’t been reactive towards all, but to some will lunge and bark. At the dog park, Angel has been somewhat rough when she plays. She has not spent time with cats or other pets. She has not bitten another animal or person. Behavior: Angel’s new owners reported her as instigating fights with other dogs. Other than that she is well-behaved. During storms she isn’t bothered. Angel isn’t bothered when someone touches her food or bowl while eating, takes a bone or toy away, is pushed off furniture, is restrained, is disturbed while sleeping, when someone unfamiliar approaches her family member. Angel was brushed, bathed and received a nail trim at the groomers and wasn’t bothered. She barks when the doorbell rings and when someone unfamiliar approaches her house. For new family: Angel’s owners describe her as friendly, affectionate, playful with people. Her activity level is medium. They love that she is sweet, affectionate, sleeps on their bed, and likes to go on long walks. At home Angel will stay in her favorite spot. She like balls and tug toys. She has been kept mainly indoors. She sleeps in a locked crate in the owner’s bedroom. She eats Taste of the Wild 2xday. She likes greenies and dried meat treats. She is housetrained and has only 2 accidents. She potties on the grass/cement. She is well-behaved when left alone. She was being crate trained, was good for up to 4 hours. She knows “Sit and Stay” commands. She likes brisk walks on leash for exercise and pulls lightly on the leash. At the offleash dog park, she wanders but comes when called. On intake, Angel allowed all handling and had a warm wiggly body with counselors.
02/27/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I met Angel back in July of last year. A pretty flower, a puppy, left with us as her owner had “hit a bump on the road”. She had been so well cared for and remained so through her 3 adoptions and returns. Why is Angel back with us? A pretty and petite gal like her, the perfect size for a New York City apartment…Everybody agrees, she is affectionate, great with kids, very playful and active, house trained, well behaved when left alone in the house, free of handling issues, accepting of groomers and welcoming of strangers…. She’s got all the stuff we want to see when we live with a pooch that is ours…Well, Angel has a little problem in the meet and greet department when other dogs are involved, not all of them, but some and it happens only when she is on the leash. Off leash, in playgroups with her peers, after some hesitation when she greets, she solicits play, offers paw slaps, play bows and vocalizes happily… We have known quite a number of dogs like her who went on to be successfully adopted with proper counseling and training. Angel is quite endearing and is just the same pup I knew…She has those velvety and enthralling eyes that follow you while she is in her kennel. She is so eloquent in her silence.. She is leashed easily and strolls quite well, not forgetting to do her business on the way. She started playing ball after our second encounter in the day..and she does not guard it…She comes on the lap. She is such a tiny thing. She loves to be petted and hugged. I trust that there is out there, the right and experienced adopter who will enjoy his or her choice of Angel for a forever best friend and make her life beautiful. Come and meet Angel soon at the Manhattan Care Center.
02/24/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: 11/23/16 Spayed female, Owner surrender (in home for 7 months) Previously lived with: Adults Behavior towards strangers: Friendly Behavior toward children/dogs/cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, and playful Other notes: Angel will chew on shoes while left alone at home 2/22/17 Spayed female, Returned adoption (in home for 3 weeks) Previously lived with: Adults, children (ages 14 & 16) Behavior towards strangers: Outgoing, friendly Behavior toward children: Relaxed, may bark when children run around and yell Behavior toward dogs: Barks and lunges at some dogs while on leash, calm with others; off-leash at the dog park, Angle plays, sometimes roughly Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Angel is described as friendly, affectionate, and playful, with a medium activity level Other notes: Angel is crate trained and does well for up to 4 hours. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/27/2016 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body a bit tense, slight lip lick Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, a bit tense, tail tucked, mouth closed Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, a bit distracted. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed, sniffs hand Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, then walks away. Summary: Initially nervous during positioning but significantly warmed up quickly, allowed all handling, play bowed and solicited attention. May benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Hyper-motivated: These dogs come on too strong and have coarse social skills. They have had a poor history of social experience with other dogs and were most likely deprived of off- leash contact. They are overly excited when meeting new dogs, often up in the other dog’s face and not able to read subtle signals to back off, which can quickly lead to a scuffle. PLAYGROUP: Angel would benefit from slow introductions to dogs who are playful or tolerant of energetic, vocal play. Angel should be integrated slowly into social settings with other dogs.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/28/17 During her initial medical exam Angel appeared tense though allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Angel’s previous owners describe a medium activity level. In the care center Angel has been timid at times, but playful and enthusiastic at other times, with both humans and other dogs. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors described below) Potential challenges: _X_ Fearful: Angel was reported to bark at and back up from strangers entering the home. Angel may be fearful of new people entering her home and would do best in an initially quiet home without frequent visitors. When new people do enter the home, they should not try to approach or touch Angel at all but rather should ignore her and toss her treats. It should always be Angel’s decision to approach a new person when she is ready to do so. She can also be placed in a crate or other room with high value chew toys when new people are in the home. We recommend only positive reinforcement, reward based training when working on this and all other issues. A consultation with a trainer or behaviorist would be beneficial. _X_Destructive behavior: Angel may benefit from crate training when home alone to decrease any chewing of household items as previously reported. She should always be left with durable, long-lasting chews and other engaging toys when she is left alone, to avoid chewing of inappropriate items. Examples are Kongs and Nylabones. The environment should also be managed by keeping shoes in locations where Angel does not have access, so she cannot destroy any shoes in her new home.) _X_ Barrier/On-leash reactive: Angel was adopted and returned due to her behavior of barking at some dogs when on leash. The owner reported that Angel would lunge and bark at certain other dogs in the building, but was exuberantly playful with dogs at the dog park. We recommend the use of positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach Angel a “Look” cue, to focus on the person walking her rather than on her surroundings, when passing other dogs.
07/02/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Angel would benefit from slow introductions to dogs who are playful or tolerant of energetic, vocal play. Angel should be integrated slowly into social settings with other dogs. 7/2: When off leash with a female greeter dog Angel initially just sniffs then walks away. After some time together she engages briefly in play but quickly becomes overwhelmed and attempts to avoid interaction. 11/28: Angel engages in vocal, high-arousal chase play. 1/29/17: Angel greets with a stiff posture and tense face, freezing each time the helper dog greets her face to face. She does respond to his bow and run play solicitations by chasing him but does so while remaining tense and vocal- low growling. 1/31-2/1: When greeting a group of playful female dogs, Angel displays high energy. She playbows while barking and running along the fence. Once in the pen, she solicits and engages in running/chase play. Her play style is vocal and she may quickly mount another dog, but responds well to handler interruptions and continues to play. 2/2: Angel continues to display high energy and is unable to control her arousal level, immediately rushing and jumping on the back of the other dog. The session is ended. 2/3: With a gently playing male dog, Angel is initially able to solicit and engage in gentle, vocal play. When there is a break in play, Angel becomes frustrated and becomes stiff and begins to low growl. She displays a lowered body and a hard stare as she slowly moves towards the male dog. She is easily interrupted and the session is ended. 2/23 Manhattan Care Center: Angel is tense upon approach. She offers a low growl with repeated approach, and corrects play. 2/24-3/2: Angel offers a brief growl when greeting dogs (male and female), but she immediately begins to solicit play once she enters the pen. She offers paw slaps, bows and vocalizations to solicit as well as during play. 3/2-3/8: Angel engages in play in small groups. She is overwhelmed in much larger social groups. 3/10-11: Angel solicits play with a playful male by offer playbows and slaps. 3/15-19: Angel engages briefly with select dogs.

NOVEMBER 2016
A volunteer writes: Adopted from us a short while ago and surrendered due to ‘no time’, let her former person’s loss be your gain! Angel is ready to party, she has a lively, kinetic energy ready to make friends, play, go for walks, play some more and then cuddle when she’s played out. Young dogs have energy, and like kids they need time spent with them – it’s not for everyone. Angel is a smart girl, bouncy and fun on leash and showed off her ‘sit’ and her ‘down’ for a treat. She’s petite, loves treats which she takes with the very edge
of her teeth, and is enthusiastic about everything! She loves life and wants to share that fabulous energy and outlook with her human. We’re told that Angel slept in bed with her person, is housetrained, played exuberantly with people she met, no one is a stranger in her world, doesn’t guard her things, and likes to play with chew style toys. Angel is an action girl, the more activity the better for her, so if you lead an active lifestyle and are looking for that perfect canine buddy, you need to meet our Angel today. As Frank Sinatra
sang, “She looks like an angel looks….she’s my kind of girl.” We hope you’ll be singing that song as you take Angel home.
